Common Ground Student-Run Educational Farm
This season there were 6 total crew members consisting of 4 full-time and 2 part-time workers. The Farm Manger was Sara Ziegler, a Junior Ecological Agriculture major. Samantha Rothberg, a Sophomore Environmental Studies major was the Secretary. The Treasurer position was held by Deb Campbell, a part-time worker, who was also a Junior Ecological Agriculture major. Cayla Tepper, a Junior, and Lauren Pomerson, a Sophomore, were both Environmental Studies majors and were full-time workers. Finally, Maggy Duffy, a Sophomore Civil Engineering major, was a part-time worker.
The crew worked with the Campus Kitchens Project to create an internship position in which the intern worked for both CKP and Common Ground. By combining both organizations, the interns will be able to gain the necessary skills and knowledge needed in order to successfully manage four garden plots outside of the James M. Jeffords Hall for which solely the intern will be responsible for. All of the produce from these gardens will be used by CKP in order to prepare meals to serve at the food shelf. In return for helping to teach the intern, the interns work for Common Ground as both the learning component and to contribute to the other organization. Common Ground, therefore, promises to provide CKP with additional produce, when it is available, if it is needed.
The internship was a success! It isn't perfect, but we will continue to work with Campus Kitchens Project to further develop this internship to better serve both parties' needs as well as the UVM and Burlington communities.
The CSA program this season hosted 64 members, running from June 22nd-September 28th, with an additional, optional pick-up October 5th. Overall the produce quality and quantity was well received by the members. We really enjoyed getting to know them all and will greatly miss them. In addition to the CSA, we provided produce weekly to the Marketplace in the Davis Center on campus from mid-June through November.
