Jane and Bill Smith are 16 weeks pregnant. Bill is 42 years old and Jane is 39; this is their first pregnancy. Because Jane is of advanced maternal age (over 35) there is a higher risk for chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. The Smiths decide to have amniocentesis so that karyotype analysis can be performed on the fetus to identify if there are any chromosomal abnormalitites.
