Girl Scout Project: My Visit to UVM!

At this year's Aiken K-12 Maker Faire and Engineering Challenge, our student web team is excited to host two workshops for Girl Scouts.

This year the Web Wizards are helping Girl Scouts earn their Website Designer badge at the K-12 Maker Fair at UVM. They will also be working with the local chapter of Girls Who Code and all of the girls will have a chance to work together and learn the basics of coding using Scratch.

Imagine, Program and Share!

WHEN: Saturday, December 2, 2017 11am-12pm

WHERE: University of Vermont, Votey room 229

WHO: Grades K-6

WHAT:In the spirit of the Netiquette badge, we are excited to introduce participants to coding with MIT's engaging Scratch program. With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations; and share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively; essential skills for life in the 21st century. Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. It is provided free of charge.

Build your own website!

WHEN: Saturday, December 2, 2017 1pm-2pm

WHERE: University of Vermont, Votey room 229

WHO: Grades 7-12

WHAT:In this workshop we will introduce participants to website development and design. We will introduce HTML and CSS and design storyboards for unique websites. We'll also go over the basic building blocks of a website like URLs, servers, content management systems and domain names. This workshop will help Girl Scouts get started on the Website Builder badge.

The Badge:

The goal is for each participant to design, build and promote their own website!
