Auditions
Thanks for your interest in auditioning for the Cat's Meow. Our next round of auditions will be September 5th and 6th, 2007.
When you audition, we'll ask you to fill out a "about me" form. If you'd like to do that ahead of time, you may download it in MS Word format or the HTML format. (In either form, please print it out and bring a hard copy to the audition. Do not email it to us.) We'll start, usually promptly, with an introduction to the group, and auditionees will sign up for a 10-minute time slot. Show up early for your assigned time in case we're ahead of schedule!
Frequently Asked Questions
- Who can audition?
Any female UVM students - first-year, upperclass, grad* and med* - are eligible to audition.
- How many people are you taking?
We take really, really great singers whose talents work with the current needs of the group. If we hear one amazing singer, we'll take one; if we hear four amazing singers, we'll take four. Often, qualified and fabulous singers audition, but don't fit the needs of the group in that particular semester. We encourage people to try more than once - your voice may be just what we're looking for another semester!
- What are auditions like?
We want to hear you sing both alone and with the group. We'll look at your musical experience, range, musicianship, etc. and ask you to sing one verse of a solo.
- What should I sing for my solo?
Anything that shows off your voice (preferably no show tunes!) Check out our repertoire to see the sort of thing we've sung in the past: it's most helpful for us if you sing something pop, jazz, oldies, folk... the sort of thing you'd be likely to sing with us. It's also helpful for you to sing something reasonably well-known so that most of us will recognize the song. If you're still having a dilemma, contact our music director, Sarah G.
- I have a scheduling conflict with auditions.
We realize that people may have conflicts. We have, in the past, set up one or two extra auditions upon request. Contact our president, Sarah K, to discuss scheduling conflicts.
- How much of a time commitment is Cat's Meow? How often do you rehearse?
It's a serious commitment. We rehearse 6-8 hours a week, and we break it up into three nights. Attendance is mandatory. You will be expected to practice on your own as well, but music is taught in rehearsal. We have one big performance and several small ones each semester, all of which are mandatory. We have members of Cat's Meow who play sports, are involved in other activities, have night classes, work evenings, etc. and we work with their schedules.
- Do you have to be a music major?
No! Most of our members are not music majors. It wouldn't hurt, though!
- I can't read music. Is that okay?
We've had really great members who learn only by ear, even some who can arrange by ear. If you can't read music, demonstrate to us that you're a strong singer and that you can hold your part.
- I have a question that hasn't been answered.
Email it to Megan Estey, the webmaster. Chances are someone else has the same question - if it comes up a couple times, we'll add it to the FAQ.
