Citizen Awareness Training for Students

One Person Can Make a Difference!

Citizen Awareness Training for Students
would like to give you A Night-Off!

Mission Statement:

The goal of this organization to provide a means for increased awareness about social issues. The world is in a sensitive place and as college students we are in a position to have tremendous influence on it's direction. We are also on the threshold of adulthood; this is the time to be exposed to the realities of the world. It is in this time that we can best learn from exposure to and participation in social involvement. This generation has learned apathy and for that reason has the lowest voting rate, highest drinking rate and least sense of self. Yet we are at a point in our lives when our minds are sharp and our passions are strong. The energy is here if it can only be channeled. The goal of our organization is to educate this group and encourage its active involvement in community efforts.

The world's social issues reside in every town. If we work with the communities we live in, we can be working for the world community. Our goal is to encourage good citizenship by fostering awareness and active involvement and service. We employ the standard academic approach to social issues, in-order to best understand them in theory. Then we engage in the community to learn the actuality of that issue while volunteering our time to improve the situation.

Course for Credit

In the Fall of 2001 we will be offering a course that addresses important social issues and incorporates service learning.

The course will be based in cross-discipline academic study, service learning and community service.

The Service Component

The service component of this class hopes to operate on several levels. The purpose of this class is to examine social issues in our community. We will be working with professors and community members to bring a cross-section into the classroom and the reading list has been designed to give you optimum perspective on these issues. But there is a large part of the situation that can be learning from the hands on experience that is found outside the classroom. The service component works to facilitate this other learning. From the interactive experience you will gather first-hand knowledge and more insight into the issues than before. You will then bring this back into the classroom to share with your classmates. In this way we will maximize our energy and our learning. For these reasons it is important for you to secure a service project for yourself early on in the semester. If for some reason you encounter difficulty contact me immediately. You will be required to have a certain number of hours of service by the end of the semester so if you don't get started right away you could find yourself in trouble later.
