The foundation on which our greatness rests must always be excellence in undergraduate education, built on the intellectual tradition that John Dewey upheld: free inquiry and critical thinking; learning by doing, with rich opportunities for hands-on experience in the real world; and education not just for citizenship, but leadership in a democratic society. In this spirit, UVM is launching several important new initiatives.

A new President’s Distinguished Lecture Series is providing a public forum on campus for nationally and internationally recognized scientists, artists, and writers to share their ideas and experiences.

Recognizing how greatly the fine and performing arts enhance all the liberal arts, the University is creating a state-of-the-art performing arts theater in the new University Commons and investing in the arts, particularly the Fleming Museum, which is an invaluable resource not only for students and faculty but also for the Burlington community, Vermonters, and visitors.

The capstone of our commitment to the liberal arts is the new University of Vermont Honors College, which offers exceptional academic opportunities to gifted and dedicated students across our programs and disciplines. The Honors College will enliven the educational environment for everyone at UVM, students and faculty alike.
