Okavango Map
The Okavango Swamp is located in the northern region of Botswana, covering an area roughly the size of  Connecticut.  The Okavango Swamp is where the Okavango River empties after travelling 1000 miles from its origins in the Angolan Highlands.  The Okavango Swamp is adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park.  Unlike many other countries in Africa, Botswana has dedicated almost one-sixth of its territory to permanent, well-managed game sanctuaries.  There are very few roads and those that do exist are only suitable for four-wheel drive vehicles.
The Okavango Swamp is a surprisingly wet oasis in an otherwise very dry, and arid region.  The Kalahari Deset lies to the southwest and the Makgadikgadi Pan lies to the north..  The Makgadikgadi Pan is a large salt pan that has resulted because of the high rate of evaportation that occurs.  Even when all other regions in southern Africa are parched and desparate for water, the Okavango Swamp is inundadted and flooded with waters from the Kuvango River, in Angola, creating a vast inland lagoon broken up by islands and channelled through beds of perennial waterways.
