Once considered to be specific to European honeybees, RNA viruses have been detected in bumble bee species. The goal of my research is to examine the prevalence, means of transmission, and effects of RNA viruses on bumble bees.

I am also leading Vermont’s involvement in the National Honey Bee Survey (NHBS), a comprehensive survey of honeybee pathogens and parasites throughout apiaries in the United States. The NHBS has been funded annually since 2009 by the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and is coordinated by the University of Maryland (UMD) in collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Bee Research Lab (BRL) and APHIS.
