Things to think about before you buy….anything!

When you consider making a purchase, from food products to dish soap, furniture, a home, and even your ski pass, there are some basic issues to think about.  A conscious consumer can lessen their impact on the environment and even positively effect their communities, local economy, and quality of life at the same time!

#1.  Think about how your food is grown and/or processed.

  • Is there a large fossil fuel cost in getting it to you?
  • Is the income earned from your purchase going back into your own community?
  • Is your item produced, grown, or harvested in a way that minimizes the environmental impact?

#2.  Think about the human health costs and benefits of the product you choose.

  • Are there chemicals in the product that could harm you in the long run?
  • Were chemicals used in production that may be harming someone else?

#3.  Think about the effects on the surrounding community.

  • Is there chemical run-off seeping into your groundwater?
  • Are there noises or smells associated with production that you wouldn’t want in your own backyard?
  • Does the producer really give anything back to the community- economically or socially?
