Once known as the Fertile Crescent, the Marshlands of Iraq have changed greatly through the ages. They were once considered among one of the world's most important habitats. The fabled marshlands are thought by some to have been the location of the Garden of Eden. The area between the Tigris and Euphrates was important habitat for migratory and native bird species, spawning fish, and an ancient culture known as the Marsh Arabs. These people have fished and grazed water buffalo in the waters for more than 5000 years. Due to human influence it was estimated that only seven percent of the original marshlands are still intact.
