Board of Directors Meeting - 5/10/02

Montpelier, Vermont

Members Present: Kathy Renfrew, Bruce Parks, David White, Claudia Vanderborght, Judy Corey, Cassie Major, Gay Craig and guest Pam Quinn of VISMT.

Pathways Conference

Item: Date

The beginning of December seemed to be the most successful time to hold the conference based on attendance numbers.

Action: December 2 & 3, 2002 were chosen as possible dates. The idea is a speaker on the evening of Dec. 2 and the workshops on Dec. 3.

Item: Location

Members suggested Basin Harbor in Vergennes, The Lake Morey Inn in Fairlee and the Clarion in South Burlington.

Action: Pam Quinn will investigate these and other venues for the first week in December.

Item: Workshop Topics

Members brainstormed the following possible workshop topics for the conference:

    1. Science Literacy — K-12
    2. Project 2061 — Unburdening the curriculum — High School
    3. No Child Left Behind — Elementary
    4. Performance Task Analysis — K-12
    5. Integration of technology into the science kits - Elementary
    6. Technology and young women — Middle & High School
    7. Human Genome Project — High School
    8. DNA Technologies — High School
    9. Inquiry Guidelines — Elementary & Middle School
    10. Inquiry and Experimentation — Elementary and Middle School
    11. Computer — based Geology Inquiry — High School
    12. Food Works — Elementary
    13. Water Quality Monitoring — Middle & High School
    14. Biodiversity — Middle & High School
    15. Astrobiology — Middle & high School
    16. Astronomy — K-12

Action: Board members will invite possible presenters in these areas to make workshop proposals as soon as the date and location are announced. Names, mailing address, phone number, e-mail address and contact person for interested presenters are due to Pam Quinn 5/31/02. Cassie will send out an invitation to all VSTA members for proposals in the next newsletter.

Item: Vendors

The Board has agreed to invite primarily non-profit vendors again this year.

Action: Judy will contact Bob Raskovitz and David White will contact Rose Wheeler concerning the contact and organization of vendors.

Item: Workshop Proposal:

Bruce presented the proposal form for workshop presenters to the Board and a few minor revisions were suggested.

Action: Bruce will revise the proposal form and then send it to Pam and Cassie.

Treasurer’s Report:

Judy has moved $500 from the savings account to the CD at 2.25% interest.

Newsletter:

Cassie plans to publish May 20.

Next Meeting:

June Work Day is June 21,2002 at Cassie’s house in Waterbury, VT.
