Vermont Trail Collaborative Landscape Management Work Group

This group evaluates ways to improve upon the overall existing trail system in the Green Mountains. The objectives of the group are to address landscape scale issues transcending landownership and jurisdictional boundaries which have been identified from local knowledge, previous planning and the collaborative process. The general trail management objectives the group addresses include:
  • Identify high priority statewide or regionally important trails that transition across various land owners. Determine priority trails for management in perpetuity through identifying land interest acquisition and/or management agreement priorities.
  • Identify sources and possible actions to remedy unacceptable ecological impacts and/or social conflicts on the existing trails system.
  • Identify existing trails that may be appropriate for multiple use management by adding additional uses. This process includes identifying and/or developing criteria that determines the sustainability (both social and ecological) of the proposed trail.
  • Identify and address any public health and safety concerns of the existing trail system.
  • Identify existing trails that are not ecologically sustainable and/or that receive very little use for decommissioning.
  • Identify potential new trails in sustainable locations supported by multiple user groups to assist in the long-term operations and maintenance.
  • Establish cost estimates for operating and maintaining the existing and proposed trail system, including any existing backlog of maintenance needs.
  • Identify areas with particular compliance concerns and develop strategies and priorities to address these concerns.

Meeting Announcement

The Vermont Trail Collaborative Landscape Management Work Group will be hosting a series of four public information meetings focusing on the south zone of the Green Mountains to explore trail-related management issues. The meetings format will provide participants the opportunity to interact with trail managers and provide input into future management of these public resources. The main objective for these meetings will be to learn about local ideas, opportunities or concerns associated with all types of trail use to help land and trail managers provide a more sustainable trails system, more consistent management across jurisdictions, and a better quality recreation experience for the public.

Anyone who is interested in sustainable trail management is invited to join. General Meeting Agenda
