UVM has added qualitative research tools to its portfolio of software in support of faculty and student scholarship. Evaluated and promoted by a small team of UVM qualitative research faculty, endorsed by the Faculty Senate Education and Research Technologies Committee (ERTC), and underwritten by Provost Knodell, we've added two packages from Researchware, Inc. to UVM's software library.

HyperRESEARCH enables you to code and retrieve text, build theories, and conduct analyses of your data. With its advanced multimedia capabilities, HyperRESEARCH allows you to work with text (including "rich text" and Unicode text), graphics, audio and video sources. HyperRESEARCH's Theory Builder can be used to perform in-depth analyses of your coded data to see whether the coding supports your hypothesis.

HyperTRANSCRIBE can be used for transcribing audio and video files using popular audio and video formats. It provides both graphical and keyboard controls to play, pause and loop playback so your hands never have to leave the keyboard.

Both HyperRESEARCH and HyperTRANSCRIBE are available for download from the UVM Software Archive for Windows and Macintosh computers. During installation, you will need the information contained in the license key file (also found on the Software Archive). HyperRESEARCH and HyperTRANSCRIBE will only function for a 30-day trial period without entering the correct licensing information. UVM has licensed sufficient copies for faculty, staff, and students for an initial three-year period. Faculty who want their students to use those tools in their courses may direct them to download and install the software at no cost.

Online tutorials, interactive training and other documentation on how to use HyperRESEARCH is available from the Researchware, Inc. website. Professor Meghan Cope from the UVM Department of Geography will be coordinating webinar training and a user-group listserv and will be the initial contact person for the user group — watch for announcements in early January 2013.

Thanks to Professors Cope, Bond, Shea, Mares, Fothergill, and Gerstl-Pepin for pursuing this, to the ERTC for considering and endorsing, and to Provost Knodell and Assistant Provost Castano for their support of this valuable new service for the UVM research community.

Communication and publishing of UVM websites just got easier with the introduction of go.uvm.edu, a URL shortening service specifically for links to uvm.edu web pages.

Similar to third-party solutions like TinyURL and bitly, go.uvm.edu offers the ability to take long, complex URLs — common to websites utilizing advanced features, such as those included with the UVM Web Template — and create alternative links of fewer characters, such as transforming this article's URL of:

http://www.uvm.edu/it/?Page=news&storyID=14888&category=etsstatus

to the more manageable:

http://go.uvm.edu/6ysud

Links created by go.uvm.edu are automatically generated, and since go.uvm.edu can only be used to shorten links to uvm.edu, viewers can click with confidence that a go.uvm.edu URL will take them to a real UVM website and not be redirected to advertisements, viruses or other malware. Shortened go.uvm.edu links can also report their web traffic statistics, such as number of hits and viewer sources.

Whether sending an email, sharing via Twitter or other social media, creating a QR Code or printing a URL on a flyer or poster, go.uvm.edu makes it easy to create, share and track the usage of shortened links to UVM websites.

Starting at 7:30 pm on Tuesday October 25th, ETS will take the file server "files.uvm.edu" offline for migration to new hardware. The service outage is expected tolast at least four hours. "Files.uvm.edu" hosts several widely-used file shares including:

\\files\shared: Departmental shared directories, or "S:" drive, on Campus domain-joined computers.

\\files\: Home directories used for "My Documents" folder redirection and "H:" drive mappings on Campus domain-joined computers.

\\files\mca: Microsoft Campus Agreement licensed software distribution.

\\files\software: Distribution point for various Windows software installers, including ApplicationXtender and LiteTouch boot media.

\\files\sis: Developer files for the "Banner" student information system.

\\files\r25: R25 event management software client installation share.

During this maintenance window we will be retiring our NetApp filer appliance, and replacing it with a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 file server. While we do not expect to encounter any client compatibility problems with the new server, we are welcoming people to test the new server for potential problems at this time.

Please contact saa-ad@uvm.edu for details on how to access the new server for test purposes only. We encourage especially people who are running scheduled tasks or scripts that work against "files" to test the new server before next Tuesday.

On Sunday, April 10, the "UVM" wireless network's security certificate, which provides trusted encryption for the network, will expire. Computers and other wireless devices using the "UVM" campus wireless network will no longer be able to connect until the new, updated certificate is installed and accepted as trusted.

Note that domain-joined Windows 7 and Vista systems will silently receive an update which will take care of this transition.

Windows XP (or non-domained joined Windows 7/Vista) and Macintosh computers can avoid any interruption in wireless service by downloading and installing the updated certificate in advance of the Sunday expiration.

After Sunday's expiration, attempts to connect to the "UVM" wireless network will vary based on operating system.

Macintosh

Mac computers should automatically prompt to download and trust the updated certificate. Before choosing to accept, verify the following information:

Issued to/Common Name: radius.uvm.edu

Issued By/Issuer:

Equifax Secure Certificate Authority

GeoTrust Global CA

GeoTrust DV SSL CA

One of the two following fingerprints:

SHA1: D7 70 1A D1 06 BF A5 2C E5 E4 32 EC 68 18 51 57 59 61 DA 64
MD5: ED D8 25 B2 BF 72 9F C0 C4 AE 59 D3 55 29 27 FB

Verifying this will ensure your "UVM" wireless network connection and encryption is safe and legitimate.

Windows

Windows computers will either quietly connect without incident, or produce a certificate validation error.

If attempts to connect wirelessly fail, Windows and Macintosh computers can have the certificate installed manually using the link above. Handheld devices like the iPhone, iPod, iPad or Android-based mobile phones that do not prompt for an updated certificate should have their network connections reset by deleting/forgetting the "UVM" network name and reestablishing the connection from scratch.

General instructions for wireless setups and help resources can be found on the UVM IT website.

If you have problems that you are unable to resolve on your own, you can contact the UVM Computing Helpline at (802) 656-2604 or at helpline@uvm.edu.

Insecure unencrypted access to the UVM mail servers will be disabled after today. Connections to imap.uvm.edu, pop.uvm.edu, and smtp.uvm.edu will require TLS or SSL encryption in order to protect passwords.

Many UVM affiliates who already connect in a secure manner will not notice any change. The relatively small portion of the total UVM email population who have been connecting insecurely have received several emails over the past few weeks notifying them of the change and providing URL with instructions on how to change their email client's settings to comply with the new mail server rules. The email also shows where the insecure connections were made, as an aid in determining which of multiple computers and phones has insecure settings.

Clients unable to connect after Monday, June 14, may still access their email using UVM Webmail until their usual mail program can be configured correctly.

The Perseus system that has served UVM well for a number of years for creating and administering on-line surveys has been discontinued by its developer. For several months, a cross-functional team of ETS staff and experienced clients and support staff has been exploring alternative systems. After analyzing over a dozen alternatives, the Team came down to two candidates: LimeSurvey and RedCap. After further analysis and a public demonstration of the two systems, it was clear that RedCap would not meet the needs of faculty and staff researchers with typical surveys. So while RedCap was considered by many to be easier to learn, it alone couldn't be the only system supported at UVM.
In order to maximize the on-campus expertise and quality of service and to minimize the duplication of staff support effort, we've chosen to bring up LimeSurvey as our standard on-line survey software to replace Perseus. In support of that effort, ETS staff are collecting and developing tutorials and demonstration materials to help individuals get started using LimeSurvey, and they have prepared a brief getting-started document similar to the one available for Perseus.

LimeSurvey offers strong support for research surveys, with branching logic, flexible question formats, anonymous or identified participants, and a variety of output formats and graphical displays for the data collected. LimeSurvey is widely used in higher education, so there is a wealth of training and demonstration information already available on the Web from other sites. UVM's implementation of LimeSurvey includes authentication with UVM's NetID/password system, so it's very easy to get started in a secured environment.

The support development effort is well under way now, and new training and support materials will continue to appear at the ETS survey support site, http://www.uvm.edu/ets/survey. Check that site for tutorials and for the link to LimeSurvey to get started.

We plan to decommission the Perseus server as soon as active users have converted from it but no later than December 31, 2010. If you've used Perseus for certification or training quizzes, you might consider converting to Blackboard; otherwise you'll likely want to convert to LimeSurvey immediately. Data from past surveys will be available for some time on the MySQL database server but would require nontrivial manual conversion (SQL, Access+ODBC, etc.) to be retrieved or to be merged with new surveys. It will be easiest to use the Perseus portal to retrieve survey data before December 31.

Thanks to Carley Tillinghast and Ben Schacher for leading the team investigating survey software options and for taking on ongoing support of LimeSurvey; to team members Phil Plourde, Darcy Pientka, Emily Stebbins, Alan Howard, Chip Sawyer, Ralph Stuart, Larry Kost, and Eric Hoefel; to Ben Coddington, Jim Lawson, Mike Austin for server implementation and UVM customization; to Deb Goller and Megan Hack for UVM branding; to Jonathan Trigaux for work on the survey web site; to Geoffrey Duke for coordinating the survey software showcase; to Carol Caldwell-Edmonds for exploring Helpline support options; to David Todd for support of the selection process; and to everyone who has tested survey software and participated in identifying an outstanding replacement for Perseus.

Anyone with an active UVM NetID can create a LimeSurvey survey. If you have questions about LimeSurvey that aren't addressed by the LimeSurvey support site, please contact the LimeSurvey support team via the Computing Helpline.

After a great deal of testing throughout this semester, SAA has begun conversion of the central IMAP server (imap.uvm.edu/pop.uvm.edu/webmail.uvm.edu) to Dovecot.

This should be a mostly transparent conversion process. Indeed, some 16,000 accounts, or 31.1% of existing accounts have already been converted over the last few days.

Users should not have to take any action upon conversion.

At this time, there are two things that users may notice post-conversion.

One is that accessing mail folders will be significantly faster; the server will index and cache the contents of folders, so that subsequent openings of a large mail folder becomes a less expensive operation.

Two is that some old "lost" folders may reappear; they may appear as "Sent Mail.1", "Trash.1", or similar. These may have been "lost" due to some of a user's IMAP clients not specifying the "mail/" IMAP prefix, and saving folders in a different location not visible to clients that
specified the proper folder prefix. Dovecot has been configured to ignore the "mail/" IMAP prefix, so that both settings act in the same way. In other words, after conversion, it is no longer necessary to specify the mail/ prefix. If a user does discover "extra" folders that appear post-conversion, simply open the folder and determine if any messages need to be saved; if not, delete the folder.

One other item which is less apparent is that after conversion, all folders become multiaccess, meaning that no special steps need to be taken to allow simultaneous access to mail folders from multiple devices. This should also reduce the dreaded "hung imap" problem that
users with multiple devices sometimes experience.

The conversion will continue over the next couple of weeks; we expect to have the majority of accounts converted before the start of the summer session.

If you have specific technical questions about this conversion, please write to saa@uvm.edu. If a user is experiencing problems with their UVM mail, be it through webmail.uvm.edu or using an IMAP client, please have them contact the UVM Computing Helpline at 656-2604.

resources, often leaving the system unresponsive. Monitoring ESET
forums over the
weekend, it is clear that others were having this same problem.

ETS
has been working with ESET since Friday to diagnose the problem, which
first started appearing late Thursday afternoon.

It is important to activate virus protection on computers that have had
it removed or disabled. The procedure to recover from the error
condition and reinstate virus protection, as Jonathan Trigaux described
in a posting this morning on the
IT-Discuss listserv, is this:

If you have disabled ESET NOD32 virus protection (without
uninstalling the software):

Start up (boot) the computer in Safe Mode

Re-enable the service

Reboot

Wait a few minutes before logging in (to give ESET NOD32 time to
update automatically to the corrected version)

Log in and use the system normally

If you have uninstalled ESET NOD32:

Go to the UVM
software library and download the ESET NOD32 installation program

Run the installation program to install ESET NOD32, following
the instructions it displays

Use the system normally

If
you have difficulty with this procedure, or if you continue to
experience the problem afterwards, please contact the ETS Help Line at
802-656-2604. ETS is working to provide a simpler reactivation
procedure, and will post an updated news article if and when a simpler
procedure is available.

ETS acknowledges the
frustration and lost productivity this situation has caused.
ETS is grateful for the collaboration of UVM's IT support community in
diagnosing this problem, providing clients with workaround, and testing
and implementing solutions.

Additional information, including a specific password expiration date, will be sent to you via email before your password expires. This email will not be asking for your password or for you to provide any account information and will only serve to remind you to visit the UVM website to change your password. Be wary of any email that asks you to supply your account name and/or password.

New passwords must be at least eight characters long and consist of
at least two different kinds of characters, such as:

upper-case letters (A B C D)

lower-case letters (a b c d)

Good Morning, All,

This is a quick report on the recent network outages on campus and current network status.

At about 11:30am on Tuesday, 28 April, campus network clients began to experience disruptions in service, intermittent initially and then sustained. After an initial diagnosis by Telecommunications and Networking Services staff, the vendor's technical support was contacted. Their initial diagnosis was that either the networking system's internal routing for campus had gotten confused or that we had an equipment failure. Attempts to correct the problem as a routing ("spanning tree") problem were only partially successful, and they concluded that we appeared to be having equipment problems in a couple of boards in a core switch. The replacement boards were installed at about 8 pm, but that only resolved the problem for half of the connections on campus. It appears that the disruption in service on the core system caused other switches on campus to become confused, too, and they did not recover when the core system was restored. The TNS staff completed the manual restarting of those other switches on campus at about 11:30 am this morning.

Aside from a brief disruption between 1:00-1:30pm on Tuesday, off-campus access to core UVM servers was not interrupted by these problems.

If you are continuing to experience network problems after 11:30 am Wednesday, please call 6-8888 to report the problem. That line will be staffed throughout the day to take calls, but if it's busy, please leave a message in which you indicate the physical location (building, room) of the network connection you're reporting.

TNS staff and Cisco's technical support have been working to restore service and haven't had time to fully analyze for possible causes. It appears that at least part of the problem is inability of some of our older equipment (8 years or older) to support the increasing complexity and speed of our network. Over the next few weeks, we will be reviewing our network architecture and installed base of equipment to begin the systematic replacement of older devices.

We apologize for the disruption in campus services. We recognize that the campus relies upon network services for all facets of its work and that disruptions in service are frustrating and costly. We will be making appropriate changes in architecture and reinvestments in equipment to reduce the probability of disruptions like this in the future.

Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) is making available a new, secure
wireless computer network for on-campus users. This new network employs
technology that will allow the vast majority of the UVM community to
connect from on-campus locations through the wireless ("Wi-Fi") system
without using the Cisco VPN Client. The new system uses the
previously-installed Wi-Fi access points and campus authentication
system, but it makes connecting to the system more convenient and
will reduce ongoing support costs.

The name of the new wireless network is simply "UVM", and it is visible
now to your mobile Wi-Fi device -- laptop, iPod Touch, iPhone,
etc. ETS expects it to become the preferred wireless network,
replacing "Cat's PAWS" for most campus users. Your wireless-capable
device should detect the new network almost anywhere you are currently
using Cat's PAWS. Notable exceptions are Rowell and Aiken, but
work is underway to upgrade Aiken over the summer.

Joining "UVM" will require a few minutes to set up, but you only need
to configure each device once. After that, your laptop or handheld
should automatically sign onto "UVM" when selected. If you have
not changed your campus Network-ID password since May, 2008, you must
do so, on the Account Management
web page, in order to use this system.

For more information, including step-by-step setup instructions, please
visit the ETS wireless
website.
This new network improves convenience while continuing to offer high
levels of security. Please send your feedback about this or any of
