A good library resounds with the sights and sounds of learning. It's the heartbeat of a school, a place where children and adults are drawn. It's an environment where curiosity thrives and inventions begin.

The Orchard School Library Media Center is a place like this. Thanks to the quiet, steadfast efforts of Donna Sullivan-Macdonald, the Orchard Library Media Center is a living resource that encourages students, teachers, parents, and community to learn more about the world in which they live.

Meet Donna

Although Donna always knew she wanted to be teacher, she never dreamed she would become a librarian. Donna earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Vermont and worked initially as a reading teacher in St. Albans and Winooski. She taught Chapter I Reading for 13 years at the John F. Kennedy School in Winooski.

She left teaching for a number of years to raise a son but returned to the classroom when her child started school. She made an initial inquiry at the South Burlington School District which led to a part time position at Orchard School in a Supplemental Reading Program. After a year's time, Nancy Hunt, the librarian at Orchard at that time, asked Donna to work as an assistant in the library, and Donna agreed. This event led to librarian coursework at the University of Vermont, correspondence courses through the University of Utah, and an eventual endorsement as a library media specialist in 1996. When Nancy Hunt retired from Orchard in 1996, Donna became librarian, and she has served the school and community in this capacity ever since. Ever in pursuit of increasing her own knowledge, Donna recently received a Master of Education in Information Technology from St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont.

Donna is a librarian who sees her role as a facilitator to make learning accessible, alive, and active. Technology has played a significant role in helping Donna in her work. Her interest in technology is reflected in this story about her and Orchard School.
