Digital video has to this point been just another tool, albeit a powerful one, that Charlie can use to support his presentation of content. He uses the video to engage students in conversations about teaching. He hasn’t yet put the video cameras in the hands of his students, or their students, but he hopes to do so soon.

Charlie shows videos to students in “…relatively short bursts—15 to 30 minute segments.” When he shows the video to students, he’s mainly showing them things he wants them to learn how to do.

The next logical step, according to Charlie, is to have the students videotape themselves doing these things that he wants them to learn. He’s waiting until more cameras are available for that, though, still a little hesitant to lend his own camera to students: “I’m old enough to have this value about treating equipment well and if it breaks, it’s gone, then I won’t have the use of it either.”
