Dr. Ronald W. Pero International Research Green and Gold Professor, Assistant Professor, Medical Laboratory Science

Dr. Seth Frietze holds the Dr. Ronald W. Pero International Research Green and Gold Professorship. He performed his postdoctoral training at the University of Southern California and served as an assistant professor at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado prior to joining the faculty of the Department of Biomedical and Health Sciences as an assistant professor in 2015. Dr. Frietze is invested in the next generation of scientists, and seeks to train his students to use cutting-edge molecular technologies and to apply basic research skills to address important biomedical questions.

Research and/or Creative Works

Whole-genome sequencing applications have created a revolution in the way we study disease and biology. A major challenge in training the next generation of scientists to utilize these rapidly evolving technologies is to provide them with the basic skills to analyze and to apply these approaches to address important biological questions. Research in the Frietze Laboratory applies these approaches to study the molecular mechanisms of gene regulation with the long-term goal of discovering new therapeutic strategies to target cancer cells.

The regulation of gene expression is fundamental to all biological processes and plays a central role in cancer. A major goal of the laboratory is to understand the interplay between chromatin structure and transcriptional regulators to guide distinct expression programs of disease. This work involves exploring chromatin structure genome-wide and understanding how aberrant changes in epigenetic modification can affect the expression of key genes and contribute to the pathological progression of cancer.
