Barley Fodder Feeding for Organic Dairies

Description: Organic dairy farmer John Stoltzfus has worked over the past few years to perfect his method of growing barley fodder on his New York farm. In this webinar, he and Fay Benson of Cornell University will discuss the benefits and challenges of growing and feeding fodder to dairy animals. Other animals (from horses to chickens) also have benefited from the practice and their owners may be able to adopt the principals addressed in this webinar.

The idea of finding a grant to help fund your farm operation is an alluring proposition. However, while opportunities for grant funding do exist, as the saying goes, there is no such thing as free money. Mary Peabody, director of the UVM Ext New Farmer Project, will talk about some common grants available to farmers, the benefits and drawbacks of pursuing grant funding for your farm, and how to think strategically about using conventional and alternative financing to support your operation through the start-up phase. Building a Sustainable Business Registration Deadline

Description: For start-ups to five years in business
Upcoming sessions: Dec. 5, 12, & 19 and January 9, 16, & 23 (January 30 reserved for snowdate) from 1-4 pm in Berlin, Middlebury, Morrisville, and White River Junction.
Sessions will be held simultaneously in all three locations using a combination of distance technology and on-site instructors.

The Building a Sustainable Business course guides participants through developing a business plan for farm businesses. No Kid Left Behind Symposium

It's no secret that value-added agricultural processing is one of the fastest growing sectors in the Northeast Kingdom's economy. That's why NVDA is one of the proud sponsors of "NO KID LEFT BEHIND" a symposium on the challenges and solutions for bringing more value to Vermont's dairy goat farms. On a typical dairy goat farm, 80% of all kids are sold as a commodity, adding very little to the farm's bottom line.This symposium provides a structured and strategic conversation with producers, processors, distributors, funders, chefs, and the agricultural community in general.
Chevon (goat meat) presents a critical opportunity to bring more value to Vermont's dairy farms. The event will spend a good deal of time discussing this opportunity.

CLOSING THE LOCAL CAPITAL LOOP: Financing the working landscape

Description: On Nov. 29, 2012, businesses connected to the working landscape will have the opportunity to meet with service providers, capital providers, and their fellow entrepreneurs for a day of networking, discussion, and education. Maple syrup producers, farmers, food manufacturers, woodworkers, and other regional business owners can explore ways to energize their plans and grow their businesses.

Ag Finance Hour

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Location: Middlebury Extension Office
Description: Now is a great time to update your financials. “Ag Finance Hour” is a time to sit down with a UVM Extension Farm Business Management specialist, one-on-one, to work on the financial planning, critical to your farm’s success. Meetings last an hour to an hour and a half and are focused on developing balance sheets, cash budgets or completing financial analysis.

Cheese, Butter, Yogurt-Making Class

Time: 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location: Bethel, VT
Description: Learn how to make soft cheeses, butter and yogurt in your own kitchen using farm fresh milk. Get acquainted with using butter molds and adding herbs or other flavors to our final product. The class will include a handout with instructions. Products such as cheese and yogurt culture, cheese cloth, citric acid, and farm fresh milk will be for sale.
