A Message from Douglas O. Lantagne, Director

I want to take a moment to introduce myself as the new UVM Food Systems Spire Director and welcome you to its official website. I will be serving in the Food System Spire Director role on a part-time basis as I continue my role as Dean of UVM Extension for the next two years.

Before I go further, I want to thank the members of the UVM Food System Steering Committee for their leadership of the Spire over the past two years and I hope I can continue to build the Spire with their help over the next couple of years.

I have three broad goals that I hope everyone will assist me with over the course of my tenure as director. The first is to maintain and grow the level of collaboration across the University campus units. We have many bright and engaged faculty, students and staff working in Food Systems and there is opportunity to better connect and engage in transdisciplinary food systems research, education and outreach that is of great importance to Vermont, but also at the regional, national and international levels. Of most recent note, a group of UVM faculty has formed and is working to develop and hone their food systems research within the field of Women and Gender studies.

The second is to increase communication and collaboration with a variety of organizations, educational institutions and individuals across the state that work to grow, strengthen, and support our Vermont and regional food system everyday. Already we have made significant headway in accomplishing this goal, opening discussions with groups such as Chelsea Green, Vermont Technical College, Vermont Law School, the Intervale, and many others.

The third is to brand the Food Systems efforts at UVM and within the state to show the depth and breadth of the many contributors required to develop a strong, vibrant and expanding local food system. I hope that these goals show the importance of collaboration in research, education, outreach and branding that is necessary to keep Vermont as the intellectual and visionary leader for the nation.

I look forward to working with all those both within and outside of the food systems community in the coming months.
