ENVS 195 Environmental Literature, Arts, and Media

An introduction to the environmental humanities exploring the range of values and cultural expressions of the human-nature relationship. We will explore contemporary and historical works of literary, visual, and performative art to see the role the expressive humanities have played in shaping social-cultural attitudes toward nature and the human dilemma of depending on nature as source and sustenance. Through readings, discussion, short response papers, and small group work, students will gain exposure to U.S. and global artists and movements in the environmental arts and literature as well as eco-media studies.
