Contact: David Booth, Layla Masant

Phone: [Home] 802-425-2754

Last Updated: 03-18-2009

General Description: We are a diversified small scale organic farm located in No. Ferrisburgh, VT, located just 16 miles from downtown Burlington,Vermont's largest city and a nationally recognized mecca for the arts. We grow a wide range of vegetables for our farm stand, wholesale, and homestead. We enjoy growing some less common crops such as baby leeks, cilantro, haricot verte, along with traditional favorites like lettuce, sweet corn, and tomatoes. We also have several cows, goats, pigs and laying hens. We have spent a lot of time improving our soils, and now they consistently produce crops with exceptional flavor and sweetness. Having two distinct soil types gives us more options, and allows us to grow over a longer season. With over 1000' of river frontage, a large wetland, and two ponds, water is never far away. We try to break for refreshing swims on hot days, and a morning swim is a great way to begin and end every day, along with an impromptu yoga class led by our farm manager, Layla.

Internship Starts: May 1
Internship Ends: October 31
Number of Interns: 2
App Deadline: April 7
Minimum Length of Stay: 3 months

Meals: Five days per week we will have a farm dinner around 2 pm. This will be the main meal of the day, as is still the tradition in many countries. Interested interns may share in the cooking of this meal. The farm will provide the ingredients. Other meals are the responsibility of the interns, with farm eggs and produce made available to them at no cost. Reasonably priced organic raw milk is available just a short walk from the farm.

Skills Desired: Some experience with your hands in the dirt is preferred. At the least, a great desire to have your hands in the soil, and with an understanding that there will also be times when that soil will be cold and wet, your back sore, and thoughts of a job at the mall going through your head. There will will also be sweltering hot days, and no small number of perfect days. We ask that you try to enjoy them all, and maintain a positive attitude throughout. We are looking for people who are interested in learning, working hard, having fun and enjoying everything that the farm has to offer.

Educational Opportunities: Interns will learn in many different ways. Working in the field with David is a season long lecture in soil science, plant pathology, pests, crop needs, compost and more. We'll also spend time making compost, explaining the intricacies of the seeder, learning proper tool use, the various means of weed control, food preservation, and many other topics necessary to the running of a farm and homestead. We will visit and likely do a work exchange with interns from other local organic farms. Many hands do indeed make light work! Interns will also have access to our large library of farm, gardening and homesteading books. Various compilations of planting times, seed calibration, and other minutiae compiled over many years will be made available to interns upon completion of their stay. Interns are also encouraged to have their own project on the farm.

Stipend: A stipend of $100 per week is provided, along with farm produce and housing.

Housing: Several options are available ranging from a rustic barn apartment to a room in the farmhouse, or a tent site in the field or woods. We will have a solar shower and an outhouse along with a bathroom in the house.

Preferred method Of Contact: Telephone or e-mail David and Layla

Internship Details: Interns are expected to work five days per week, averaging 8-10 hours per day. Tasks may include planting, harvesting, weeding, tending the animals, assisting with building projects, and other tasks as necessary on the farm. We will break on weekdays for a farm dinner and rest/siesta around 2 or 3pm. This will be the main meal of the day, with as many ingredients as possible from our own and other area farms. Interns will be expected to look reasonably neat, albeit sometimes dirty, and always welcoming, polite, and helpful to farm visitors and customers.

POSTED 2/28/08 Spatial Analysis Research in VT

I am looking for one or two students who would be interested in using computer models (Spatiotemporal Epidemiological Models) to simulate disease outbreaks in Vermont and to look at the effectiveness of potential
interventions.

Interested individuals should be comfortable with computers, interested in epidemiology and intrigued by the concept of using the virtual world to simulate real world problems.

I believe research stipends are available through the College of Medicine to support summer research projects.  Additional monies may be available for longitudinal projects.

This is a project that you can literally do while sitting on your back porch -- if your computer is powerful enough).  And, as no one else in Vermont is doing this type of research, the potential for publications and presentations is high.

If you are interested in finding out more about this project, please email me Charles.Hulse@uvm.edu.

There are openings for two interns for the summer of 2007; however, there is an opportunity for continued work on this project.

Posted 2/20/07: Outdoor Education Instructor Positions, Hulbert Outdoor Center, Fairlee, Vermont

Current openings for Spring season-February 26- June 8, 2007
Anticipated opening for Fall 2007- (late August- November).

Job Description

The prime responsibility of an instructor is to work with participants at the Hulbert Outdoor Center in residential programs emphasizing teambuilding, ropes course, natural history, and other curriculum areas.

Instructors at the Hulbert Outdoor Center work very hard. We usually work a five day work week, though on occasion some programs require additional time including work on weekends. Our days are long (often 7:00 am to 9:00 pm), and the instructor job demands a great deal of energy and commitment. Instructors on some occasions do prep work for programs outside of regular work hours.

At Hulbert we work with children from many different types of educational backgrounds including homeschoolers as well as public, private, and parochial schools. We are committed to adapting our program to meet the needs of the children who attend our programs. In addition, we live and work in a community setting involving shared
housing, shared meals, and often, shared recreational activities. We set high standards for instructors both for performance and for community relations.

Instructors spend the majority of their work time with middle-school- aged children participating in a Hulbert school program. Additionally, instructors support other Hulbert programs as determined by the needs of the organization and the skills and interests of the individual instructor. All employees participate regularly in tasks that support our programs including housekeeping, facility upkeep and maintenance, office work, and other behind-the- scenes activities.

In our work with children Hulbert staff take on many responsibilities and job descriptions. In a given day an instructor's role could be defined as teacher, facilitator,
counselor, comedic actor, naturalist, trip leader, supervisor, janitor, emergency care giver, coach, or friend—often all at the same time. Hulbert instructors are generalists, encouraged to build skills in many different areas in order to assess and to meet the needs of the children and the program.

Hulbert is committed to providing a supportive, high quality work environment for instructors. Instructors have ample opportunities to develop their teaching skills, to work with educators from several different schools and philosophies of teaching, and to research and implement new activities and styles of presentation.

Hulbert Instructors receive a salary, room and board on campus at the Hulbert Outdoor Center, paid staff training, and discounted prices on Hulbert Programs including Leadership Training Courses.

Posted 1/9/07 Internship with VT Agency of Natural Resources, lakes and Ponds Management and Protection Section

Mission of agency/services provided:
The Lakes and Ponds Management and Protection Section monitors the water quality of lakes, determines the causes of problems, and develops ways to solve them. Our staff provides assistance regarding lake management and protection to municipalities, lake associations, and individuals. We also administer permits for aquatic nuisance control activities and for encroachments into lakes and we offer grant opportunities in a number of management areas.

Proposed projects/programs:
We have a 30 year data set of post-ice-out temperature readings collected on lakes throughout Vermont. This data would be valuable in helping to determine what effect global climate change is having on Vermont lakes. Most of these data remain in paper format, so a large amount of data entry would be necessary before these data could be analyzed. While later ice out dates and warming air temperatures have been reported in New England, I am unaware of any lake temperature data set for so many lakes having been published.

This internship may start as soon and possible and continue into the summer. Interns may conduct some of the work from home but will be expected to spend a portion of the work hours in our Waterbury office. For more information, you may contact Kellie Merrell (see below).
