Seabird-Aquaculture Interactions in the Gulf of Maine

A graduate assistantship will be available in January 2008 for a student to pursue a Master of Science degree in the Department of Wildlife Ecology at the University of Maine. The goal of this research is to improve our understanding of the interaction of aquaculture operations and seabird populations along the coast of Maine.  This particular M.S. project will primarily focus on seabird nesting behavior on islands near existing or potential aquaculture sites.  Other research elements may be added as the project develops.  This position will provide an annual (12 month) stipend ($15,000) and tuition waiver for January 2008-May 2010.   The student will be Graduate Research Assistant for all but one semester when he/she will be a Graduate Teaching Assistant.  The research will include collaboration with professionals from agencies and private industry including the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Department of Marine Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the aquaculture industry. Maine has over 3,400 coastal islands with many considered nationally significant seabird nesting islands.  Maine also has active finfish and shellfish aquaculture operations that are important to Maine and local economies.

A Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife science, ecology, or a related field and field experience in wildlife research or management are preferred.  A 3.0 GPA and 1100 GRE score (combined math and verbal scores) are the minimum academic requirements for the University of Maine, but successful applicants to the Wildlife Ecology graduate program typically have GPAs >3.3 and significant wildlife field experience.  Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with many people on a complex project will be pluses.  This position requires regular travel to field sites, living at an off-campus location during summers, and working on boats and islands in a challenging marine environment.  A valid driver's license is required.

If you would like to be considered for this position, please submit by mail a cover letter; resume; copy of academic transcripts; and names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of three references to the address below.  A writing sample will be helpful, but it is not required; the sample can be a term paper, laboratory report, publication, or similar document for which you are the sole author.  Unofficial copies of transcripts are acceptable at this stage.  Please DO NOT submit information by email.  The review of applications will begin on November 27, 2007, but applications will be accepted after that date.
