BIO

Nicholas Lalanne joined the American Sign Language (ASL) program at UVM in 2018 following his experiences as instructor at Holyoke Community College and several years as adjunct faculty at different colleges in both Massachusetts and Vermont. He has experience teaching a variety of undergraduate ASL and Deaf Studies courses as well as graduate level practicum and internships.

While pursuing his graduate degree, his coursework included Linguistics, Theories of Languages, and Teaching Methods. He has a strong interest in, and aptitude for, digital pedagogy.

For Lalanne, his ASL students are like seeds planted in a garden. He nurtures them as they learn the language and culture of Deaf people, growing from tiny seeds to become beautiful flowers. Seeing them learn and comprehend the language, and sharing a window into Deaf Culture, is what he enjoys. He received the Mosaic Center Outstanding Faculty Award in 2020.

Lalanne co-presented the Secret Ingredients for a Happy ASL Classroom at the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) Conference. He has been a board member of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) since 2022, where he currently serves on the Equity in Deaf Education committee.
