BIO
Before joing the Department of Education at UVM, Dr. MaryEllen Simmons had extensive experience an educator ranging across preschools and elementary, middle level, and secondary education schools. She also served in several educational leadership roles such as curriculum leader and curriculum director/coordinator.
As the first member of her family to go to college, she aims to mentor other first-generation students to reach their goals and change their lives through educational pursuits.
Along with teaching courses, Simmons provides field supervision for undergraduate and graduate level pre-service teachers while connects with mentor teachers in partner schools to support positive working relationships. She also examines and develops the equity work of students during their experiences in the field and works closely with seminar courses to support the portfolio process for students.
Her areas of research center on the connection between language acquisition and mathematics. She strongly believes that supporting students at a young age with language skills is critical to support learning in all areas.
In addition to being a strong advocate of low-income students and first-generation college students, Simmons is a traveler and invested learner of global cultures and international studies.
