BIO
From 1989 to 2014, Dr. Manning served as a UVM HESA faculty member and program coordinator. Her professional interests include social justice, international higher education, leadership, and organizational theory. She taught courses on International Perspectives in Higher Education, Cultural Pluralism, Practicum, Anthropological Perspectives in Education and Social Services, Qualitative Research, Student Affairs Profession, and Higher Education Administration.
Dr. Manning received Fulbright Fellowships in Ireland, China, and Hong Kong and taught on Semester at Sea. Her honors include the Kroepsch-Maurice Award for Excellence in Teaching, NASPA’s Outstanding Contribution to the Literature and/or Research, and NASPA’s Pillar of the Profession. She also received UVM awards for LGBTQA, racial, gender, and social justice advocacy. Manning contributed service to the profession; most notably as Program Chair for the 2002 NASPA National Conference and Executive Editor of NASPA’s Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice.
In addition to articles in higher education journals, Manning authored or co-authored Organizational Theory in Higher Education; One Size Does Not Fit All: Traditional and Innovative Models of Student Affairs Practice; Research in the College Context; Rituals, Ceremonies, and Cultural Meaning in Higher Education; and Where I Am From: Student Affairs Practice from the Whole of Students’ Lives.
Manning served as a research team member on NSSE’s Documenting Effective Educational Practices project that resulted in the book, Student Success in College (2010). She has published articles in About Campus, NASPA Journal, Journal of College Student Development, Qualitative Inquiry, Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, and Review of Higher Education.
Her Fulbright Fellowships included awards at Beijing Normal University in China in 2003 and 2004 and Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2005. In 2017, she received a Fulbright Fellowship to present and conduct research on resilience in higher education at University College at Cork, Ireland.
Dr. Manning holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration with a minor in Anthropology from Indiana University; an M.S. in Counseling and Student Personnel Services from the University at Albany; and a B.A. in Biology from Marist College. In her free time, she is an avid sailor and boater, certified downhill ski instructor, and frequent international traveler.
