Dr. Garwood's research and teaching focuses on students with and at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) across three specific areas: (1) pre-service preparation and teachers use of relationship-based pedagogy, (2) academic interventions, and (3) classroom management. He currently serves on the editorial board of Behavioral Disorders and the Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. He is also a licensed teacher in English Education (grades 7-12) and Special Education (grades K-12).

Dr. Garwood's research is currently funded by two grants from the U.S. Department of Education. He is Principal Investigator for Project Burn and Turn (2020-2025; $500,000), an exploratory project examining malleable factors related to special education teacher burnout, as well as Project Resiliency (2022-2027; $1,250,000), a personnel development grant focused on preparing the next generation of leaders in the field of emotional and behavioral disorders.

His most recent book, Reclaim Your Challenging Classroom: Relationship-based Behavior Management, was published in 2021 by Corwin Press. In addition, he has published over 55 peer-reviewed journal articles in the field of special education.
