BIO
In addition to overall administration of the Counseling Program, Dr. Welkowitz coordinates the internship and practicum programs, as well as the specialization area of Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She teaches a variety of courses within the Counseling Program, including Laboratory Experience in Counseling, Counseling Practicum, Counseling Internship, Diagnosis in Counseling and Addictions Counseling.
Previously, Dr. Welkowitz was an associate professor and assistant academic coordinator for 7 years in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate program through Southern New Hampshire University (now affiliated with Northern Vermont University). She also served as a research assistant professor within the Center on Disability and Community Inclusion at UVM for 13 years where she was involved in a variety of federal grant projects designed to enhance the capacity of schools to support the mental health needs of students.
As a licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Welkowitz also has extensive experience providing direct clinical services, supervision and consultation to individuals, families and systems in a variety of settings, including higher education, schools, private practice, outpatient and inpatient environments. She is a long-standing member of the Vermont Center on Narrative Practices.
Dr. Welkowitz has a strong interest in systems change. Her involvement in numerous applied projects support the capacity of school systems to better meet the mental health needs of students and to enhance their support of students from economically or otherwise disadvantaged backgrounds. Through the Vermont Center for Narrative Practice, she is actively involved in supporting individual and systems change through strength-based practices.
