BIO

JB Barna joined the Social Work Department at UVM in 2000 and served as an instructor, program coordinator, and field education coordinator in the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program. JB's leadership, teaching, and service made a lasting impact on our students, alumni, colleagues and field partners as well as the college, the university, and the State of Vermont. Her deep commitment to justice, humanity, kindness, and issues pertaining to students of color and the LGBTQ+ community have been recognized through the Jackie M. Gribbons Award (2009), the Glen Elder Leadership Award (2018), and UVM’s Outstanding Advisor Award (2020), among others.

JB's impact includes a long history of collaboration with community agencies and organizations, and providing orientation and training for agency field instructors. She also co-led the creation and served the first director of the of the Dewey House for Civic Engagement, which later evolved to become the Leadership and Social Change Learning Community at UVM. 

Prior to joining UVM, JB served as a case worker with the Howard Center and the Vermont Department of Children and Families, and as Assistant Director of Residential Services at the Howard Center Children Youth and Family Services Division.
