Ann Pugh taught in the Department of Social Work for the 26 years until she retired in May 2022. She began as a part time lecturer in 1985 and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2005. During this time she taught hundreds of students, preparing many to shape the policy and practice of social work in Vermont and throughout the country. She is one of four UVM Social Work graduates who served as Vermont state legislators.
Over the course of her career, Ann taught a variety of core courses, foremost amongst them being social policy. She designed a popular course which involved taking students to the legislature, modelling to the students that it was a normal expectation that social work graduates could contribute to policy making at the highest level. She was also instrumental in teaching in crucial areas such as poverty and social justice aligning with the heart of CESS mission and UVM’s Our Common Ground values.
Pugh is a respected and admired member of the Vermont community. She consistently used her position in the legislature for the benefit of the department, the college, and the university, as well as for individual students, staff, and faculty members. Her service as a Vermont State Legislator included leadership positions in multiple committees, including the House Human Service, Child Protection, and Health Reform Oversight Committees. She also presented at national conferences on service-learning, home-based services, and family services.
