For students in the B.A. Music – Composition/Theory concentration, the Senior Project is the capstone requirement. Students should consult with their intended Senior Project instructor during the semester prior to registering for the course, and are expected to have an approved project plan in place at the start of the Senior Project semester.

A Senior Project in Composition will be an original work of a size and scope that constitute a substantial challenge to the student, accompanied by an analytic essay that describes the work’s
structure and compositional process.

A Senior Project in Theory/Analysis will involve original research and analysis of a size and scope that constitute a substantial challenge to the student. The student will write a formal, scholarly paper of approximately twenty pages (including diagrams and illustrations) plus a precise bibliography. A public presentation reading or summarizing their paper is strongly encouraged.

A preview examination of the Senior Project must be taken 4-6 weeks prior to the end of the semester or date of the public presentation of the project.
