Dr. Jones is presently director of global health economics within the Center for Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Vermont School of Medicine. Prior to joining the faculty on 1st November 2011, Dr. Jones was director in a multinational pharmaceutical company, evaluating new approaches to offering cost-effective care in rare diseases, especially bleeding disorders, diseases requiring transplantation, and pulmonary diseases like alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

Before joining UVM, he worked for 5 years within the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in London. As a fellow in the Centre for Outcomes, Research and Effectiveness (CORE) at University College London, he was health economist for the National Guideline Development Group on 6 U.K. mental health initiatives that included, most recently, the Guidelines for the Treatment and Prevention of Drugs Misuse. On returning to the U.S., Dr. Jones was a faculty member at The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health where he co-authored a paper on the importance of the patient's perspective and patient-based health technology assessment.

From 2009-2010, Dr. Jones co-founded the Health Economics Research Center for Evaluation in Luxembourg (HERCELUX), an academic initiative housed within the Central Hospital and funded as part of the Euro 140million Partnership for Personalized Medicine. In this capacity, Dr. Jones undertook two projects. The first was to establish an inaugural HERCELUX meeting for lung cancer experts, in collaboration with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, who were evaluating the cost-effectiveness of protein biomarkers to identify early stages of lung cancer. The second initiative was to evaluate the costs of establishing local competencies in the area of fertility treatments, as compared with traditional recourse to foreign (Germany, France, Belgium, etc.) competencies. In this role, Dr. Jones co-authored Luxembourg's first paper on the cost of fertility treatments. Such a focus on the costs of fertility procedures was the crux of his doctoral dissertation at Oxford, namely The cost-effectiveness of alternative embryo transfer policies in in-vitro fertilization, results of which were presented in British Parliament and formed the basis of a series of papers.
