    Research-in-Progress Seminar #226
“Refugees and Transportation Equity in Vermont”

    By Pablo Bose, Geography, UVM

    Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at 7:30 p.m.
John Dewey Lounge (Room 325), Old Mill Building
    University of Vermont

Issues of equity and access in transportation have long been recognized as central to those concerned with environmental and social justice and indeed have emerged as a key site of struggle, engagement, and opportunity for diverse communities, planners, and policymakers alike. Much of this discussion has been situated within the framework of urban planning challenges in large metropolitan areas with clearly identifiable racialised or low-income neighborhoods, yet the issues of equity in Vermont are in many ways no less apparent. For many within this smaller, semi-rural, and putatively homogenous state, questions of access and mobility are paramount—including low-income groups, senior citizens, and the physically challenged. One particularly visible section of the Vermont population in this regard is the growing refugee community, one that has increased considerably in recent years.

Refugees are among the more vulnerable members of the broader population, lacking many of the basic resources and support systems others take for granted. Adjusting to life in a new country can often be an extremely difficult task for those who have been uprooted—often violently and traumatically—from their old homes as Vermont’s refugee populations from regions such as Bosnia, Vietnam, the Sudan, Somalia, Bhutan, and Iraq can no doubt attest to. In order to make the transition to new lives smoother, service agencies work hard to provide much-needed support for food and shelter, language training and translator services, education, and health care, among many other things. Yet equally important is the availability and access for refugee communities to affordable and convenient transportation in order to get to new jobs, schools, hospitals, community centers, and a raft of other services necessary to help them transition to their new lives. This presentation reports on an ongoing research project that draws on community-based surveys and interviews to ask the question, just how equitable is transportation in Vermont?

Pablo Bose is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Vermont (UVM). He teaches courses on immigration, political ecology, South Asia, transnationalism, race and ethnicity in the US, and international development and is also part of the Global Studies, Asian Studies and Canadian Studies programs at UVM. His current projects are on refugees and settlement in the Northeast as well as on globalization and urbanization in India and climate change and forced migration in the international arena.

Trace Bio:

I was born in Austin, MN (you know, where SPAM is made) and moved to the small town of Buena Vista, CO. I first started playing guitar when I was about 11 or 12 years old when my brother Greg and I both chipped in $5 to buy a $10 acoustic guitar from a guy named Herbie. We didn’t know where to start so we picked up a guitar magazine and learned how to play a song by Metallica. Although I was not a fan of heavy metal, that was what I originally learned to play, on acoustic guitar of course. Shortly after, I learned how to play some chords and songs like Johnny B. Goode and various Def Leppard hits.

I could never afford lessons so everything I learned was on my own, learning other people’s songs, making up my own stuff, etc. I became very interested in why music sounds good and why different notes and chords seem to work together. This got me very interested in music theory. I started to figure out the patterns that exist in most music, and started to put names to my discoveries like “Trace’s 7 chord theory”, etc. (later in college I took a basic music theory class and found that all of my discoveries already existed and had big important sounding names). The more music theory I learned, the more I started writing my own songs, trying to incorporate my new discoveries into my music.

I met Jonah Werner (now a rising acoustic folk songwriter star) in high school and started playing with him at the (only) local coffee shop in Buena Vista – mostly Jackopierce and other various folky songs. I then hooked up with Tim from Newcomers Home and started playing old Dylan and Cat Stevens tunes. We all attended CU in Boulder, CO and still continue to play together from time to time. Meanwhile, my style of playing started gaining influence from a variety of musicians such as David Wilcox, Ani Difranco, and Phil Keaggy. I stopped using a pick when I realized I could play more complex music using all five of my fingers. My musical style continues to change as I experiment with different ideas and explore new territories.

It’s been such a great journey from the time when I first played that old acoustic guitar (thanks Herbie). I truly enjoy the guitar and look forward to the times throughout the day when I can pull it out and try out some new stuff. I have so much fun whenever I play and consider it a blessing to get to share my music with other people. I hope you enjoy!

Join renowned author and journalist Catherine Manegold for an hour of reflection and conversation about the history of slavery in the North. Manegold is a former journalist for The New York Times, Newsweek and the Philadelphia Inquirer and as a foreign correspondent, covered Asia and reported from the Middle East. In her recently published, "Ten Hills Farm: The Forgotten History of Slavery in the North", the author explores the early history of black slavery in North America, revealing the interlaced stories of three families of slave-owners who lived on a New England farm first settled by John Winthrop. This riveting history unfolds over 150 years as these families lived with slaves and profited from the slave trade in the North, the West Indies, and the American South.

This presentation will describe a series of prototype projects that are assessing the potential for applying geographic methods to studying the Holocaust, particularly GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and geovisualization. Two projects will be highlighted: exploratory mapping of the Nazi concentration camp system, focusing on the historical geography of the system's creation and the deployment of labor at subcamps; and the use of visual analysis to interrogate the spaces of Auschwitz. These methodological experiments are laying the groundwork for what the participating scholars and students hope will be a new research agenda in Holocaust Studies, Geography, and the history of World War II.

Anne Kelly Knowles is Associate Professor of Geography at Middlebury College.

Whether you wish to be a Disc Jockey or a volunteer for WRUV, if you're an avid student or stellar community member, come on down to UVM and learn all you will need to know about how WRUV operates through UVM students and Burlington community members! Everyone is welcome! DJ Training gets those interested involved in learning about WRUV, the ins and outs of the station, the FCC rules that bind, and shows just how fun being a DJ can be. Starting with a general meeting, those who continue on go through two weeks of training sessions where they learn about turntables and the station, and then shadow current DJs on their show, where they experience first hand how to create a great show. They complete training by creating their own "demo tape," where those who pass are then qualified to start participating in the "Graveyard" (the hours between 2 and 6 am).

Coughlin is founder and Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab – the first multi-disciplinary research program created to understand the behavior of the 45+ population; the role of technology; and, the opportunity for innovations to improve the quality of life of older adults and their families. Dr. Coughlin’s own research focuses on how the convergence of baby boomer expectations and technology will shape the future of public policy and drive innovation across global industries -- including the financial services, insurance, health, IT, telecommunications, automobile and retail sectors. He has published his work in a variety of business, engineering and policy journals. In February 2008, the Wall Street Journal named him one of America’s 12 pioneers inventing the future of retirement and aging. Dr. Coughlin was recently recognized by the Visiting Nurse Association as a "Home Health Hero" for his research in technology-enabled innovation in home healthcare services for the elderly.

One of Scotland's most valued tradition bearers (BBC Radio Scotland) fiddler Alasdair Fraser, is joined by the American cellist Natalie Haas for an evening that will bring a new freshness to the energy and beauty of Celtic music. A consummate performer, Fraser is known for his warm and witty stage banter, with the reputation of being one of the finest fiddle players Scotland has ever produced. (Scots Magazine). Alasdair and Natalie, who met as teacher and student, have been touring together for several years now, and the alchemy of their playing has won critical acclaim wherever they play. Opening for them will be the young Cape Breton fiddler Kimberley Fraser whose lightening quick lefty style leaves audiences gasping with awe. She'll be accompanied by (and who knows, they may switch instruments part way through as the Cape Bretoners are equally adept at piano and fiddle) another stellar performer in his own right: Troy MacGillivray.

Reid Ewing is a Research Professor at the National Center for Smart Growth, associate editor of the Journal of the American Planning Association, columnist for Planning magazine, and Fellow of the Urban Land Institute. Formerly, he was Director of the Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University, and earlier in his career, he served two terms in the Arizona legislature and worked on urban policy issues at the Congressional Budget Office. He holds master degrees in Engineering and City Planning from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Transportation Systems and Urban Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He has authored books for the major planning and development organizations: Developing Successful New Communities for the Urban Land Institute; Best Development Practices and Transportation and Land Use Innovations for the American Planning Association; and Traffic Calming State-of-the-Practice for the Institute of Transportation Engineers. The two books for the American Planning Association made him APA's top selling author for many years. His study of sprawl and obesity received more national media coverage than any planning study before or since, and at one time, was the most widely cited academic paper in the Social Sciences, according to Essential Science Indicators.

His most recent book, written for EPA and published by the Urban Land Institute, is Growing Cooler: The Evidence on Urban Development and Climate Change. Also due out this year, and published by the American Planning Association, is National Traffic Calming Manual. It all began in Cleveland, Ohio, where Rob made his stand-up debut at a high school talent show and later won the city’s largest comedy competition. While attending Boston University on an academic scholarship, he became a finalist in the 2005 Boston Comedy Festival and retired any notions of a “normal career.” With his youthful point-of-view making him a favorite at three NACA conferences, Rob now headlines colleges across the country. He booked 27 colleges out of NACA Northeast (2007) alone. Residing in New York, he also enjoys playing in a comedian basketball league and performing sketch comedy with his group The Straightmen.
