CRN: TBD

Instructor: Clare Byrne Dance Lecturer in Department of Music and Dance More . . .

Movement and Improvisation is a beginning improvisation class for creative people and movers of all sorts. Students do not need any previous dance experience, but need to be willing to move! The class will help students develop comfort and awareness of body communication and intention through movement, sound, and spoken word; range of physical dynamics and content; and skill in ensemble performance work-leading to theatrical and choreographic understandings, capacity for leadership, cohesion in group dynamics, and personal insight. Four main training practices will be covered in the course: Action Theater, a technique developed by Ruth Zaporah; Contact Improvisation, a technique developed by Steve Paxton; Music and Dance Collaborative Improvisation; and finally Site-Specific Improvisation-taking improvisation out of the dance studio and "into the field." Material fees include the text Free Play by Steven Nachmanovitch and tickets to see local live performances of dance and theater.
