Welcome from the Dean

Joel Goldberg Every June for the past seven years, I have spent an hour or so at each of our new student orientation sessions talking to the parents and families of incoming students. The purpose of these cozy chats (OK, they are actually large lecture presentations in the Billings Lecture Hall, the largest lecture hall on campus), is to help parents understand the journey that their children are about to embark upon as students at UVM, (in general), and in the College of Arts and Sciences, (in particular). Spotlight on the Religion Department

Kevin Trainor The past few years have been of time of significant change for the Religion Department, with the retirement of Luther Martin and Bill Paden, two long-standing colleagues who served as department chairs for a total of more than thirty years. CAS Faculty Receive Distinguished Professorships

Endowed Professors 2012Jane Knodell, Provost and Senior Vice President, along with the recommendation of selection committees and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has approved the appointment of three faculty members to the following endowed professorships: The Leonard and Carolyn Miller Distinguished Professor of Holocaust Studies, the Breazzano Family Green and Gold Professor, and the Richard and Pamela Ader Green and Gold Professor. Anthropology Professor Inspiring Change, A World Away

Goodwill ShelileIt was more than snow that excited the South Africans. (Though it did graciously fall early in their two-week visit to Vermont.) The delegation of ten students from the University of the Free State, here to explore new perspectives on race and gender as well as models of student leadership, were ignited – at times discomfited – by the open dialogue in venues across the UVM campus.
