Gateway/Entry-Point Courses into Plant Biology Major/Minor

Students who would like to explore the discipline of Plant Biology should take the following courses:

BCOR 011 Exploring Biology

Exploring biology from cells to organisms. Topics include origins of life; ancestral organisms; uni- and multi-cellular energetics; evolution of respiration and metabolism; and the genetic code. Uses the hierarchy of cells to organisms as the underlying theme for examining the complexity of life. We begin the course with a discussion of the scientific approach, providing students the tools for critical thinking and hypothesis testing. From that platform, we explore the evolution of life through the development of organic complexity. This is a four-hour course with a laboratory component and has a co-prerequisite of CHEM 032. Offered in fall.

BCOR 012 Exploring Biology

Students who have taken BCOR 011 can enroll in BCOR 012. In this course, students continue exploring the complexity of life through an evolutionary perspective by examining the patterns of inheritance and the role of natural selection in evolutionary processes, and exploring the evolution of biodiversity. Interactions of organisms with each other and with the abiotic environment form the basis for understanding the evolution of animal and plant form and function. This is a four-hour course with a laboratory component and has a co-prerequisite of CHEM 032. Offered in spring.

CHEM 031 - General Chemistry 1

First semester of a two-semester sequence. Topics include matter, stoichiometry, gas laws, thermochemistry, quantum theory, atomic structure, electronic configurations, bonding and intermolecular forces, May not be taken for credit concurrently with, or following receipt of credit for, CHEM 023, 025 or 035. Offered in fall.

CHEM 032 Introductory Chemistry

Second semester of a two-semester sequence. Topics include solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, aqueous ionic equilibria, thermodynamics, electrochemistry and nuclear chemistry. May not be taken for credit concurrently with, or following receipt of, credit for CHEM 036. Prerequisites: CHEM 031 or 35. Offered spring semester.

In addition, students who are exploring Plant Biology as a major should consider taking a mathematics course that will apply toward the Plant Biology Core Requirements. The Mathematics Core requirements include Math 019 and Math 020, or for students interested in intensive use of mathematics, Math 021 and Math 022.

MATH 019 - Fundamentals of Calculus I

Introduction to limits and differential calculus with a wide variety of applications. Students interested in intensive use of mathematics should take 021. Credits: 3.

MATH 020 - Fundamentals of Calculus II

Introduction to integral calculus with a wide variety of applications. Prerequisite: 019. Credits: 3.

OR

MATH 021 - Calculus I

Introduction to calculus of functions of one variable including: limits, continuity, techniques and applications of differentiation and integration. Credit not given for more than one course in the pair 019, 021. Prerequisite: 010; or 009 and 002; or strong background in secondary school algebra and trigonometry. Credits: 4.

MATH 022 - Calculus II

Techniques and applications of integration. Polar coordinates, Taylor polynomials, sequences and series, power series. Prerequisite: 021. Credits: 4.
