Quotes

"I promote service-learning, because I believe that it can't help but build connections between the individual and the collective, between history and the present... My work with ALIVE may not have produced a unit plan, or a research article, but I can articulate what's important to me, and I can say with enormous pride that I am doing something about it. For an independent study designed to in part "promote reflective practice and engaged citizenship", I can think of no greater outcome."
Marissa Barbieri, 2001 ALIVE Volunteer Scholar

"ALIVE is a unique and fabulous opportunity to be a part of an exciting learning community that no one who wants to engage in adult learning should pass up"
ALIVE Volunteer Scholar, Fall 2001

"VISTA has given me a level of responsibility that would have been hard to find in other sectors. I've worked with amazing people who are committed to the community."
Dante Napolitano, VISTA Leader CEDO, Burlington, VT

The ALIVE Background

Academic Learning Integrated with VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

ALIVE is a project initiated by the University of Vermont and undertaken in partnership with AmeriCorps*VISTA.

It hopes to ensure that the rich experience of an AmeriCorps*VISTA service period transforms individuals and communities.

Research has shown that the opportunities taken to reflect and articulate experience dramatically improve growth, in this case, growth in civic understanding and engagement.

With structured and mentored study in ALIVE, scholars can expect to develop their career and learning paths, and mature in their understanding of how to effect change throughout their personal and community life.

Together, the University of Vermont and AmeriCorps*VISTA members will bridge the distances between experience, research, and liberal arts and sciences study. Working in tandem, the level of civic engagement, discourse and decision-making will develop.

Through ALIVE, the health, vitality and sustainable future of our Vermont communities will mature and become a replicable model for the nation.
