The Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies program at UVM is an interdisciplinary program devoted to the study of gender and sexuality as fundamental categories of social and cultural analysis. Gender (the social meaning of the distinction among sexes) and sexuality (sexual identities, discourses, and institutions) are studied as they intersect with class, race, ethnicity, disability, nationality and transnational movements.

A Laboratory for Advocacy

Since its founding in 1990, UVM's Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Program has connected the classroom experience with real-world engagement of contemporary debates happening on-campus, and in local, national and global communities. We'll encourage you to examine and challenge assumptions, understand marginalized experiences and perspectives, and question power at personal, interpersonal, social, structural levels. Many UVM students apply classroom learning to local activism.

An Intimate Learning Environment

Offering the B.A. and two distinct minors, GSWS is both a scholarly discipline and a unique place where students and faculty from across the campus meet to study the diversity of human experience.  Classes create an intimate environment and inclusive atmosphere that values cultural, political, and personal differences.

Join Our Community of Scholars

Faculty who teach in the program are leading thinkers in the broad fields of gender, sexuality, and women's studies.  We host a major series of innovative programming and events on campus and create opportunities for undergraduate scholarship.
