Doris Jones Fafunwa, who lives in Nigeria, wrote that life in Lagos might
be called exhilarating, exasperating, and sometimes exhausting. The political
scene is less than inspiring, and inflation seems to have increased the
poverty level. Nevertheless, Doris and her husband have not given up hope.
The American Women’s Club has given out substantial amounts of scholarships
for deserving women students in Nigerian universities. Although the level
of violence is extraordinary, some groups are working hard at training
in conflict resolution in communities in different parts of the country.
Doris is well again after a rather serious case of cerebral malaria. She
is again able to work on the project for street children. They have a
dormitory for 22 boys and a dining/multi-purpose hall. The boys, who are
all either in school or doing apprenticeships, have been working on clearing
the elephant grass, which grows up to six feet tall. The hope is that
these boys may become productive citizens. The brother of Aubrey Pulling
stopped to visit my husband, Charles, and told him of Aubrey’s death
about a year ago. At UVM, he had received a degree in agriculture and
was employed as a sales and service representative for New England Milk
Producers Association and later West Agro Chemical Company. For several
years, he was self-employed as an animal feed distributor and for Clini-Tech
Laboratories. Aubrey was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Charles
Carlton has been busy in his retirement. He sent the following update:
He has done translations of Virgiliu Florea on Romanian and British folklorists;
translated an essay on the late Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu; wrote
an article entitled “Everything You Wanted to Know about the Fifth
Romance Language but Forgot to Ask,” which has been accepted for
publication; wrote a review article for Proceedings of the Fifth Meeting
for the Romanian Academy of Scientists, gave an illustrated talk about
“Romania the Beautiful” at the library in Fairport, N.Y., and
is listed in Who’s Who in America for the 19th year in a row.

marvelous 50th reunion was enjoyed by everyone who attended. If you weren’t
there, you missed a great time. We were inducted into the ranks of the
Green and Gold, and George Brady delivered a hilarious speech recalling
his days at UVM after returning from the Marines. George has volunteered
to speak at our 75th unless something else comes up. Dave Washburn was
elected vice president of our class, and I will continue to serve as president
as well as class secretary for the time being.

A treasure of past classmate updates has been unearthed at UVM. Maybe
the news is not as fresh as we might wish, but I hope it can sustain us
until we meet as friends again at Reunion in May. Louise Grout Jorgenson
reported that she is certified by the Arthritis Foundation to instruct
classes in aerobics for people with arthritis, both in aquatics and chair
exercises. She has classes at Del & Webb Wellness and Rehab Center
in Kingman, Ariz., and also teaches a class for a nursing home. Julia
Rickard Kuntz is building a retirement home near a Seven Springs, Pa.,
ski resort. She wrote, “Miss those Vermont mountains, so these are
the closest to me.” Victor Brewer and wife Jean toured the Tuscany
Region of Italy, accompanied by three of their children, and celebrated
50 years of marriage. After retiring from farming, Leonard Korzun and
wife Grace ’58 became travelers. Spain and his parents’ homeland
in Poland were among their many destinations. Patricia Stearns said, “Hello
from Idaho to everyone.” Virginia Vincent is a fire lookout and recently
signed up for her 32nd season with the U.S. Fire Service. She reported
visiting with Lindy Millington and Shirley Pominville in November 2001,
and she plans to get together with them again in 2003. Robert and Jean
Spear (’54) Barker have bought a home in Jensen Beach, Fla. They
return to Swanton, Vt., in summer. They visit children and grandchildren
in California and Rhode Island as well. Robert said that working at slowing
the aging process takes up a good part of their time, and he doesn’t
miss dentistry a bit. Carl Pihl reported that he retired from Hunt-Wesson
Food R & D in 1994. He and Anna Marie have been singing in the Aldergate
United Methodist Church choir for more than 10 years, and they have been
supporting the activities of 17 grandchildren. John Matheson and his wife
moved from Riverside, Calif., to the high desert and now are situated
on a golf course. They have 17 grandchildren also. John is involved as
a committeeman with the Southern California Golf Association. He would
enjoy hearing from UVMers and expects to be at our 50th reunion. Patricia
Haney Fimian and husband James ’52 celebrated 48 years of marriage
in June. They have seven children and an even dozen grandchildren (way
behind both Carl and Phil above). They love their home in Virginia Beach.
Edward Balducci of Port Orange, Fla., spends summers in North Carolina.
He retired several years ago after 35 years with G.E. He now volunteers
as a tax counselor for AARP. Joyce Rosenberg Goldberg is mostly retired
but works part-time at Filene’s in Burlington and in her son’s
law office. She spends winters in Sun City, Palm Desert, Calif., where
she plays golf frequently. Hugh Levin, M.D., and Marilyn Pratt Woodard
are ardent Elderhostel participants. Their other activities include program
committee for elder educational enrichment, advisory board of the local
branch of the Salvation Army, and the horticulture committee for the Vermont
Community Botanical Garden. In addition, Hugh sings tenor with the Burlington
Choral Society and the Berkshire Choral Festival, and Marilyn continues
to drive for Meals-on-Wheels in Shelburne, Vt. Gladys Murch reported that
her grandson, John Murch, entered UVM in August. Joanne Boyer Jones has
been president of a homeowner’s group in Leisure World, Calif., a
group of 110 homes. At one of the formal gatherings, she ran into Arnold
Schwartz and his wife, Rhetta. She said, “It was great to see a classmate
so far from Vermont, and we are serving on the board together. Small world!”
Finally, I have been learning about my family roots through online genealogy.
This has restored many happy memories. If you send me an email message,

Kevin Kearney let us know that he was mistakenly identified as David Kearney
in a previous issue. Kevin has had a successful career at Butler University,
the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and the University of South Florida
in Tampa. He entered UVM with the class of 1952, but he was called back
to active duty as a Naval Reservist from 1950-1952. Because of this hiatus,
he graduated with our class.

Marilyn Stern Dukoff wrote that she and hubby Joe welcomed their 10th
grandchild in April. They enjoy their home in Great Barrington, Mass.,
and would so like to know about other UVMers in the area—perhaps
lending itself to a mini-reunion. Fran Kidder Stiles of Pittsford, N.Y.,
wrote that Carol Crossman Midgley died in November ’01 as did Jean
Ritchie Dingerson ’50 in February ’02. Margaret McGowan Shirley
wrote of her selection to participate this June in the annual reading
and scoring of the College Boards’ AP examinations in English literature.
Margaret has been a reading consultant for the Educational Testing Service
since 1996, and although retired from teaching writing at UNH, she still
represents UNH at the annual advanced placement readings in Daytona Beach,
Fla. Curt “Hooks” and Patty Burrell live in Powell Butte, Oreg.,
having retired in ’86 after a 26-year career in Federal Law Enforcement.
He still keeps his hands in investigations for the FBI. Wife Patty is
now retired after 20 years as a pilot and flight instructor. Curt’s
spare time is spent raising llamas, alpacas, cattle, and sheep in central
Oregon. He operates a small-scale livestock transport business. Curt skis
at Mount Bachelor but writes he “doesn’t have the endurance
of the ’50s.” The Burells recently had dinner in Seattle with
Bill Olden, and they have kept in touch with Jim Poole over the years.
Kathryn Carangelo Fetten and husband Jim have retired to Brick, N.J.,
at the seashore and have 16 grandchildren, one of whom is an accomplished
pianist. The area in which they live is a retirement community and close
to everything.

I hope you are making plans to join us at our 45th class reunion. We always
have a great time. We also will have the chance to see some of our old
friends in the classes of ’58 and ’59 since this is a “cluster”
reunion. Bob Wolfe, our permanent class president, is one of the co-chairs
with Dick White ’58 and Jerry Heller and Ann Maher Overton ’59.
Ronald Hill of Stow, Mass., reported that he is busy as a computer coach
for senior citizens, and he continues to cross-country ski. Ron invited
friends to contact him at ronald.hill57@worldnet.att. net. Lorna Dean
Brown and husband Mike (Myron) Brown ’56 sent news about their recent
move to Pocatello, Idaho, from Shelburne, Vt. I quote some lines from
her email message: “I never thought I would EVER leave Vermont, but
three of our four children are out West, and we just felt seeing grandchildren
twice a year was not enough. (Our daughter, Allison Brown Carr, is our
Easterner, living in Shelton, Conn.) So here we are in Pocatello in a
house with a lawn that adjoins our daughter Kym Brown Kemper’s property
so that her children can open a gate and come to Grandma and Granddad’s.
Even though Vermont will always be home to us, we took the attitude that
this would be a wonderful opportunity to explore Lewis and Clark Territory.
We have biked along the Snake River, been to Sun Valley for biking and
a visit to an art festival. We’ve also taken two trips to Montana,
one to visit our two grandsons and daughter Deanna Brown Kempf ’88
and husband Michael Holvend, M.D. We also took a trip to Yellowstone,
where we were joined by Kym’s and Deanna’s families and our
son, Tyler. I still hike in the hills near our house and have sighted
deer and moose. Our home here is on land higher than the summit of Mount
Mansfield.” Elwood “Woody” Bickford of Springfield, Vt.,
wrote that he and his wife, Rusty, recently experienced a great trip to
St. Petersburg, Russia, and Scandinavia on a cruise starting in Amsterdam.
They combined the excursion with a family wedding in Ireland. Busy volunteers,
he and Rusty deliver Meals on Wheels, and Woody volunteers at the President
Coolidge State Historic Site and Eureca Schoolhouse Historic Site. Just
a year ago, Woody finished a year of service on the Council on Aging for
the Southeastern Vermont Advisory Council. He is getting ready for a winter
of landscape painting and snow removal. The Bickfords expect to see us
at reunion. Peter Allendorf, now living in Edgartown, Mass., has retired
from a career of teaching school in Vermont. Katherine Fernald Beebe reported
that she and husband Bill moved to Bozeman, Mont., in October 2000. Kay
said it was a retirement dream, and she and Bill couldn’t be more
pleased. They are near their two boys and their grandkids. Patricia May
Barger reported that she has a busy life in Seattle. Pat serves as chair
of the local parks and recreation advisory council, is hostess to the
Crafty Ladies of Queen Anne who make hats for chemo patients, and teaches
senior nutrition and cooking classes and two therapeutic water exercise
classes. Joyce Whitty Bicknell let us know that she has spent 45 wonderful
years in the practice of dental hygiene. She served six years in Vermont
Public Health and is past president of the Vermont Dental Hygienist’s
Association. Joyce, who has one grandson, is hoping to retire this year
and move to Florida for at least part of the year. Elizabeth Bowen of
Palo Alto, Calif., wrote that she hopes to attend our reunion in 2003.
Her daughter, Serena, was married to John Battles in 2001. Herbert Brown
of Portland, Oreg., reported that he is head coach of the gold medal-winning
men’s open basketball team at the Maccabiah Games. He also serves
on the executive board of U.S. Sports for Israel. In March 2002, Herb
received the Lover of Israel Award given by the National Council of Young
Israel. Joan Kienast Bittermann of Canyon Lake, Calif., reported that
she gets together often with a Kappa Alpha Theta sister, Nancy Anderson
Weber ’59, who lives three blocks away. Joan wrote, “She even
came down to the beach to watch me do the annual polar bear water ski
run this year. Great fun!” Jessica Schildhaus Fischer of Michmoret,
Israel, wrote that she has just finished editing a beautiful little collection
of poetry, The Gentle Touch, by Ida Myers, available through Amazon.com.
Hilary Hyde Klein retired as vice president for nursing in an accredited,
448-bed long-term care facility. She then served as part-time medical
record coordinator. Hilary wrote that she is coming to grips with being
recently widowed. She has spent time with grandchildren, dividing her
time between Baltimore and a beach house in Duck, N.C., on the Outer Banks.
Joyce Laclair McDonald of Roanoke, Va., is enjoying the city and restoring
an older house. Dr. John Mesch is now a semi-retired physician, enjoying
a comfortable work pace, a bit of travel plus time to read the Vermont
Quarterly (“a good publication,” John declares) and other activities.
John lives in Albany, N.Y. Jean MacKenzie Noe wrote that she and husband
John ’56 went on the first trip with the new UVM alumni travel program
last April called “Village Life on the Waterways” of Belgium
and Holland. Jean said it was a fabulous trip. Pat Fenn ’59, MD ’65,
Stuart Alexander ’62, MD ’67 and his wife Emilie, and Faith
Abbey ’54 were in the group. Jack and Jean continued traveling after
the cruise up the Zuiderzee and on to Waterloo and Brussels before heading
back home to Bedminster, N.J. Lloyd “Jud” Porter and his wife,
Barbara Rokicki (’59) Porter are living in Leem, N.H. Jud wrote that
he is retired, while Barbara still works part time. They enjoy their daughters
and granddaughters. The Porters enjoy travel, especially to Vermont and
the British Isles. Jud is a fly fisherman; Barbara is a knitter. William
“Bill” Schoenfeld, a retired college professor and his wife,
a retired elementary school teacher, make Lakewood, N.J., their home.
Bill has gone into jewelry designing. Of his two daughters, Ketti pursues
a career in education as an art professor at Ramapo College and Montclair
University in New Jersey; Gwen is assistant prosecutor in Brooklyn, N.Y.
George Stevenson of Rockport, Maine, reported simply that he is very good
at aging. Jacob “Jay” Zwynenburg and wife Joan Latham (’58)
Zwynenburg live in Bennington, Vt., where Jay is president of a diversified
retail operation. Jay reported that when he attended his high school class
reunion, he discovered that he was the only one not retired. Hearing from
so many of you makes me look forward to seeing you at our 45th reunion
in May 2003.

As part of Homecoming festivities in October, Ellie Brown McNamara and
I enjoyed a wonderful reception at Shelburne Farms. We discussed briefly
the class gathering on Thursday night of Reunion Weekend. More details
later. Saturday was breakfast with President Dan Fogel. You’ll like
him. He is remarkably like Lattie Coor. He has lots of ideas and a catch
phrase, “competitive metabolism.” (The hockey team could use
a kick of “competitive metabolism.”) We will be part of a “cluster
reunion” this time, joining the classes of ’57 and ’59.
Claire Lissner (’57) Shepard and Henry Shaw ’59 were also in
attendance at Homecoming. Judith Watson Keene and Betsy Bishop Peden along
with their husbands attended the Rotary International Convention in San
Antonio, Tex., in June. Judith and Victor Keene celebrated their 40th
wedding anniversary and 40 years in England in May. Any classmates visiting
England are invited to get in touch with the Keenes. Pete Ousley celebrated
becoming a senior citizen in July with a cruise from Florida to Nassau
with his wife, Eileen, and their 24 children and grandchildren. Way to
go! Ann Lee Knopf and Dick White have a new grandson. He’s number
10 (eight boys and two princesses). Thomas and Laura Walsh (’57)
Lovett have 20 grandchildren and spend much of their time attending their
various activities. John Tobey is retired from the insurance industry
and working as a display fireworks operator. George Perry enjoys skiing
in Vermont and visiting his daughter and granddaughter in Westport, N.Y.
David Henderson keeps busy as a volunteer instructor of handicapped skiing
at Mount Sunapee. He also remodels homes around the country and enjoys
tennis, sailing, hunting, boat building, and traveling. George Rossi,
retired after a 30-year sales career with Mead Corp., has started a financial
planning business. Bill Higgins ’57 recently visited him from Hayward,
CA. They enjoyed remembering UVM and ATO. Patricia Doherty Denmead and
husband Robert ’60 are happily retired in Venice, Fla., and welcome
any alumni in the area. Lou and Mark (’57) Plotnick occasionally
visit from Fort Myers. Ralph Keimowitz, M.D., retired from the Gunderson
Clinic in LaCrosse, Wisc., after 33 years. He has moved to Minneapolis
and works part-time at the Minneapolis VAH. Judith Graves Mace has retired
after 18 years of teaching language arts at Vergennes Union High School.
Dr. George Milo has retired from teaching and as center director of the
Ohio State College of Medicine department of molecular and cellular biochemistry.
He and his wife live in Ohio spring and fall, Florida in the winter, and
Vermont in the summer. Judy Gibson wrote that she is enjoying good health
and, hence, a happy retirement filled with lots of community volunteer
work, elderhostels and other travel, and visits to family in Bethesda,
Md. Judy spends the winter months in Bethesda, savoring the wonders of
D.C. and the fun of being a close-by grandmother.

On May 29-31, our class will celebrate our 45th Reunion. So, come and
enjoy this grand event. Another urgent consideration is making a generous
contribution to the UVM Fund. Also keep in mind that this is a “cluster”
reunion, and we’d like to enjoy a little “class pride”
by meeting or exceeding donations from the other two classes. This event
promises to be a bang-up reunion. We’re not over the hill yet! Mary
Lee Morrill Mitchell of Newark, Del., reported that she and her husband,
Bill, met at UVM in the late ’50s and during their various moves
regularly used to run into old UVM friends. Bill passed away 10 years
ago, and one of the last trips they made together was to the UVM Bicentennial.
Mary Lee has three children and two granddaughters. She welcomes UVM visitors.
(Bill was my roommate, and we remained friends through the years. A true
gentleman from the Old South.) Sheila O’Toole Bennen of Mount Vernon,
Maine, has been actively protecting the Allegash Wilderness Waterway,
the only designated wild river in the Northeast Wild and Scenic River
System. Judy Vincent Lezama of St. Simons Island, Ga., said she’s
enjoying her retirement on this barrier island as a naturalist, exploring
the vast countryside in the coastal southeast. She also spends her time
as an antique dealer and working with horses. Peter Hannah of Bristol,
Maine, retired in 1999 from the University of Vermont after 32 years in
the forestry program in the School of Natural Resources. Lola Foster Smith
of Scituate, R.I., wrote that retirement is wonderful as she devotes her
extra time to being Grandma Lola. She also keeps busy with the Rhode Island
Community Food Bank and the Scituate Scholarship Foundation as well as
church activities and travel. Diane “Dee Dee” Weiss Mufson of
Huntington, W.Va., continues her psychology practice and is currently
serving a second term on the West Virginia Board of Examiners of Psychologists.
She and her former UVM roommate Marsha Eisen Schorr were able to get together
for a brief reunion on a recent trip to Florida. Patricia Cyr of Fort
Myers, Fla., retired in June 2001 from the Laboratory Corporation of America.
She is now enjoying the good Florida life, being involved in various church
activities. She wrote, “I advise retirement for everyone. It’s
great!” Deborah Serotte Berson of Bloomfield, Conn., wrote that she
has enjoyed the past 10 years of retirement from teaching. She does volunteer
work and loves spending time with her three grandchildren. John Brewster
of Evanston, Ill., wrote that he plans to come to our cluster reunion
and meet some old friends for the first time in 45 years. Jerome Seiler
and his wife, Harriet Silverstein ’60, live in Great Neck, N.Y. Jerome
maintains a practice in gynecology and is a clinical associate professor
of obstetrics and gynecology at the Weil Medical College of Cornell University.
He recently moved his practice to Manhattan. Lewie Dodge of Freeport,
Grand Bahama, has been constructing a processing plant for milk and orange
juice since December 1999 on this island paradise. He wrote that he has
enjoyed the experience, but now REALLY appreciates the U.S. and is anxious
to return. Joseph Cresci of Verona, Kent., reported that he and his wife,
Deborah, ride and train Dutch Warmblood dressage horses at Hearts Meadow
Farm. Granddaughter Lucia, a second grader, rides with them every day.
In addition to his infant, child, adolescent, and family private psychiatric
practice, he serves as consultant to Shrine Burn Hospital; medical director
of Beech Acres Services to children and their families; medical director
of Lifeway for Youth and of Lifespan; consultant to community mental health
centers in Oxford, Ohio, and Lawrenceberg, Ind.; and associate medical
director of Magellan Behavioral Health. Margaret Dolliver Kineer of Centennial,
Colo., has devoted two weeks in 2000 and 2001 teaching nursing in Vietnam.
J. Brett Lazar of Salt Lake City, Utah, was a medical volunteer for the
2002 Winter Olympics. He is currently a member of the board of directors
of the Rocky Mountain division of the American Cancer society. Ronald
Cook of Morgan, Vt., has retired. He does some carpentry and electrical
work part time, but he mainly does lots of hunting and fishing.

Geoffrey Moss, New York artist and political satirist, has a new book
out, The Biker Code, published by Simon and Schuster. It includes black-and-white
photographs and interviews from America’s motorcycle culture. He
would like to hear from classmates whether they ride or not. Your esteemed
class secretary has decided NOT to pack it in and retire after a little
more than 42 years of selling real estate with Foulsham Farms Real Estate
in northwestern Vermont; however, I will be doing a lot more traveling
to foreign ports. I spent two weeks last summer sailing on a 42-foot sloop
in the Ionian and Aegean Seas in the Greek Isles with friends, then another
week in Switzerland and Germany visiting other old friends. I plan to
spend the early part of the winter back in Bali after meeting other friends
and going to an international benefit for Ban the Mines at Ankor Watt
in Cambodia. Later we’ll tour Vietnam together.

Linda Leffel Landow and her husband, Lloyd, of Dix Hills, N.Y., announced
the birth of their sixth grandchild, Jonah Ross Landow, on November 26,
2001. The proud parents are son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Caryn Landow.
Jason is the brother of Noah Ilan. Harry Robinson reported that after
25 years as a practicing attorney, followed by 11 years as president of
a bank, he has decided to cut back a little, and he is now a consultant.
He and his wife, Maureen, divide their time between homes in Cohoes, N.Y.,
Brant Lake, N.Y., and Fort Myers, Fla. While he continues his many civic
involvements in the Capital District, they still have time to spend with
their six grandchildren. Their son, John G’94, and his wife, Nicole,
live near Philadelphia with their three children. Their daughter, Royce
Robinson-Lawler G’91 lives with her husband, Casey Lawler, MD ’90,
and their three children in Minneapolis, Minn. Shelley Poulsen continues
to live with her family in Dover, Mass. After four years on the school
board and building committee associated with their new elementary school,
she has taken part-time work with a photographer and as a preschool teacher.
Beverly Knight Cone is a retired widow, living in the North Carolina mountains.
She plays piano for the Lutheran Church, enjoys classical music, gardening,
and reading. Since retiring from work at Walt Disney World in June 2001,
Richard Aldinger and his wife, Janet, have been busy traveling to Europe
and other places Tom Sherman and his wife, Anne, recently paid them a
visit in Orlando. Richard and Tom played golf while their wives shopped.
They also enjoyed a great dinner at EPCOT. Ben and Mary Black are living
in Texas. They don’t say “y’all” yet or wear cowboy
hats, but that may happen. Ben hopes UVM gets back to basics—education
first, everything else next.

Virginia Clark Von Dran and her husband traveled extensively since their
retirement in 1996. Their two biggest trips last year were to Australia
and Kenya/Tanzania. Virginia is also playing a lot of golf, and she dropped

in South Carolina. Paul Flinn and his wife, Sally Ann, are living in Maui,
Hawaii. Paul’s wife is from Molokai, and they have been living in
Hawaii since 1985. Dr. Ruth Nunamaker Marx lives in East Dummerston, Vt.
She and her family use their Tubbs aluminum snowshoes as often as possible.
In the summer, Ruth provides fresh flowers for all Grange suppers. Marvin
Needleman is also in Vermont. In fact, you have probably seen his shops,
Needleman’s Bride and Formals when visiting Newport and St. Albans.
Marvin and his wife of 38 years have two daughters, a son, and four beautiful
grandchildren. His son, Mark, is a 1993 graduate of St. Michael’s,
where he was honored as a member of ECAC Division II All New England Hockey
Team. Mark currently manages the St. Albans shop. Daughter Amy is a Smith
College graduate and works as an officer with monster.com in Maynard,
Mass. Marvin’s oldest daughter, Shannon, is married to Newport architect
Mark Stewart. Jack Shabel lives in California and visits with his sons
from San Diego to San Francisco, enjoying sites between these two coastal
cities. Jack is trying to contact Ben Reston. Jack, do you ever run into
Linda Hicks Deftos? She has lived and worked in San Diego for 23 years.
Linda is at the San Diego Unified School District, where she is currently
working at the secondary level. In the past, she’s enjoyed trips
with students throughout Europe and the British Isles. Laurence Cashion
has won many blue ribbons and one best of show for his artwork. He has
been studying watercolor and attending an Italian cooking school for the
past seven years. Laurence currently lives in Newbury, Ohio. We have another
alumnus in Ohio, Charles Jackson, who is enjoying his retirement after
38 years with the Taylor-Winfield Corporation. Constance Anderson Rogers
wrote from Gilroy, Calif., that her older son, Andrew, married Amy Hekedia
on October 5, 2002, at Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove, Calif. He
will graduate from California State University at Monterey Bay this year.

Greetings. This quarter there was no news at all. It is easy to email,
so let’s hear from some more of you. Before long, we will be celebrating
our 40th reunion. It is not too early to think about returning to campus
to celebrate together. One year from this June will be our turn. It would
be wonderful to have a large group. Be thinking of suggestions for the
celebration and pass them on to me. Have a happy winter season.

Steven Rothschild is managing partner of the law firm of Skadden, Arps,
Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in Wilmington, Del. He recently joined the
faculty of the University of Pennsylvania Law School as a visiting lecturer.
He also serves as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center,
where he teaches a course on the duties of directors of publicly-held
corporations. Steve also is a member of the Board of Trustees at the University
of Delaware.

Judy Claypool Stewart and her husband, Jack, hosted a wonderful fall weekend
at their home in Ithaca, N.Y., for Claire Berka Willis and her husband,
Frank, as well as for your class secretary and husband Ken. All of us
UVMers had a great time together and look forward to the next visit. Plans
are underway for a winter weekend of cross-country skiing in Montpelier,
Vt., in February 2003.

Diane Davis Villemarie wrote to catch us up on her busy academic career.
Between 1998 and 2000, she enjoyed a rewarding opportunity to teach two
courses in the UVM History Department:. “Laws of Nature” and
“The History of Women in Science.” She found the students to
be wonderful and would like to express special thanks to Professors Alfred
Andrea and Patrick Hutton. Diane received her MA from UVM in 1994. She
went on to earn a PhD from McGill in 1999. Her dissertation under the
direction of Professor Valentin Boss was published as part of the Boston
Studies in the Philosophy of Science Series by Kluwer Academic Publishers
in the Netherlands.
