"Semiparametric Regression: A Powerful Tool for Statistical Modeling and Data Analysis" - David Ruppert, PhD., Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association and Cornell University. Ruppert is the author of five textbooks and over 100 journal articles. "Times and Reasons: Ovid's Fasti as a Historical Poem" - T.P. Wiseman, Professor Emeritus of Classics, University of Exeter. An internationally recognized authority on ancient Roman culture, Professor T.P. Wiseman's expertise encompasses history, mythology, and literature while spanning half a century of research on the late Roman Republic, Roman historiography, and the myth-history of early Rome. The author of numerous books on a wide variety of topics from Catullan Questions (1969) to The Myths of Rome (2004), winner of the American Philological Association's Goodwin Award of Merit, and, most recently, Unwritten Rome (2008), Professor Wiseman is currently at work on a new translation of Ovid's Fasti. ~ Reception to follow immediately. Since the 1950s, in Europe as well as the United States, Weinberg has fought for the preservation and declassification of government records and promoted appreciation of history within the armed forces and the government as well as among the general public.

Jazz and rock musicians, Harry Hmura & Brendan Forrest, will be performing a benefit through Musicians 4 Apes, an organization that strives to raise awareness about the cruelty involved in keeping apes (like chimps & orangutans) for entertainment and research purposes. In addition to their performance, Harry and Brendan will speak about chimpanzee conservation and welfare, as well as tell stories about individual chimps the two have had the privilege of meeting.

UVM emeritus professor William Averyt leads a weekly guided historic tour bringing the university's long and illustrious history to light. Saturdays through Oct. 25. Tour begins at the statue of Ira Allen on the UVM Green just north of the large fountain at the center of the green. Information and registration.
