Joining
a rich tradition
We
are excited about where the university has been and where we see it going.
Under Edwin Colodnys leadership, UVM has advanced powerfully. Applications
have jumped 20 percent, making the class of 2006 the most highly qualified
since the 1980s. Research productivity has jumped, approaching a milestone:
$100 million in grants and contracts in a single year! Strategic leadership
gifts including the Gund family gift of $7.5 million to bring a
renowned institute for ecological economics to the university have
launched a capital campaign that will represent investment in excellence
at levels unprecedented in the history of the university. As
president, I want to strengthen that investment in excellence by invigorating
the intellectual and cultural life of the university for students and
faculty. I aim to strengthen the investment, too, by ensuring that the
university is run as efficiently as possible, by carrying the capital
campaign to a successful conclusion, and by strategic enrollment management
that sustains the rising quality of our student body. I want to take a
compelling message to the people of Vermont: that their university has
extraordinary value to the nation and the world that begins with its role
as the driver of economic development and social and cultural wellbeing
for Vermont itself. I aim
to bring to the University of Vermont the lessons learned through a happy
career as a scholar and university leader especially the lesson
that strong strategic thinking can drive significant advances in quality
and achievement. As we are poised for our transition (the arrival of the
moving van in Louisiana is just three weeks away as I write), Rachel and
I are most of all looking forward to getting to know the people
students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends whose efforts jointly
will write the history to come of investment in excellence at the University
of Vermont. Dear readers of Vermont Quarterly, we hope to see you soon. Daniel Fogel, president |
