Spiccato

Spiccato is an off the string bow stroke. It is called a variety of different names depending on the speed, character, and musical context, including: controlled bounce, brushstroke, thrown bow, saltando, or sautille, The bowing prerequisites to learning spiccato are control of the detaché and Martelé strokes.

Playing spiccato requires a relaxed bow hand, free from tension. A teacher should review the basic strokes and bow hold when introducing spiccato.
