Using Synthesizer Accompaniments

Another option for teachers is to use a synthesizer with a built in accompanying feature. Many synthesizers contain some type of accompaniment feature - these vary widely in quality depending on cost. The Yamaha PSR series is a good example of synths or "home keyboards" in this category.

A teacher can either use the synth in the classroom, or prepare the accompaniments in advance and record them onto CD by using a CD recorder or routing the audio out from the synth into their computer and using digital audio recording software to record and burn a CD.

Advantages of using a synthesizer in the classroom are the ability to quickly and easily change tempo, key, and style by pressing a button. The disadvantage would be the extra equipment needed - a CD and boom box is often much smaller and more portable than a synthesizer, plus you may need a keyboard stand, extra speaker or amplifier, cables, and extension chord depending on the size of your class.
