Play Familiar Tunes By Ear In Several KeysPlay an easy familiar tune(i.e. Twinkle) in the regular key (D Major). Start the tune on another pitch and have students try to play the song in this new key. Some of the students may initially use very awkward fingerings. Be prepared to demonstrate a logical fingering to the students. This is an excellent exercise to help students develop finger logic and a greater knowledge of the fingerboard. Bounce around the circle of 5ths so students cannot predict what the next key will be. Place Chordal Formula To Accompany Familiar TunesPick a familiar tune that has a simple harmonic progression. While the teacher plays the tune the students try to determine which chords belong where. Once the progression has been determined, have the students invent their own harmonic accompaniments. This may initially sound like a bizarre form of ancient counterpoint, but with some guidance and voice leading suggestions the students will be able to spontaneously develop their own harmonic accompaniments.
