Harmonic TrainingPut Triads Into Primary Cadential PatternsThe I-V-I progression should be first. Next, the I-IV-V-I. This type of ear training can also become a lesson in good voice leading.Perform Scales Over Primary PatternsIn a class situation, one section can play the scale while the other sections harmonize the scale. Harmonize with the I,IV, or V chord. For example a C major scale can be harmonized as follows:
In a private studio, a piano can be used to harmonize the scale. Understanding the harmonic function of the notes of the scale is vital in developing the ear correctly. The note B is higher if it is functioning as a leading tone in the key of C than if it is functioning as the 3rd in the key of G. Extend Chordal FormulaAs students become comfortable with I-IV-V progressions, add the II and the IV chord to progressions. Substitute the II chord for the IV chord, and use the VI chord for deceptive cadences. As students become familiar with the II and VI, add the III chord and the VII chord.Eventually try adding secondary dominants, 7th chords, and other chromatic chords. Whenever possible, relate a chord progression to a pop song or some familiar piece of music. |
