Beginning StrategiesIn the beginning stages of instruction, there are three critical skills teachers must help their students learn: 1) The ability to distinguish a pitch as being higher or lower than another pitch, 2) The ability to match pitch (unison), 3) The ability to aurally recognize, sing, and tune strings to the interval of a Perfect 5th.Distinguishing Higher-Lower Manipulate Pitches - SirensPlaying sirens, or any type of game where students make the string longer and shorter. This makes the students aware of the consequences of shortening the string (raising the pitch) and lengthening the string (lowering the pitch). Manipulate Pitch - Fine TunersLet students turn their fine tuners to make the pitch lower (flat), and then bring the pitch into tune. Use a steady electronically generated pitch reference to allow the teacher to assist students in matching pitch. For some students, matching pitch is difficult. I have found in my teaching that students who passively turn the tuners a microturn at a time have the most difficult time hearing when the pitch is in tune. I suggest students turn their tuners quickly, so they can hear the pitch go into tune. Of course, a teacher must carefully monitor the situation so students don't go so sharp they break the string!
