Near the edge of the city limits, McAllister took this view of Shelburne Road in May of 1934.  The view looks north towards the city, just north of the Potash Brook, a minor stream, which flows between Burlington and South Burlington, and discharges in the northeast corner of Shelburne Bay in Lake Champlain. [1]

McAllister took this photograph to document the final stages of PWA Project #2232 (see the sign at the left of the frame).  The project included widening Shelburne Road north from the Potash Brook Bridge to Englesby Ravine, completed in 1933.  Pictured in this photograph are the final stages of the project, which included 3,229 linear feet of integral curb and gutter along this same stretch of Shelburne Road. [2]  As in the previous photograph, this part of Burlington remained undeveloped in 1934.  Utility poles line one side of the road next to open fields.  On the left side of the road, large elm trees provided shade along the route.

Today this rural scene has been replaced by pavement.  The road has been widened yet again and large box stores flank either side of the road, behind massive paved parking lots.  The massive metal signage directs traffic along this busy throughway and traffic the traffic lights control the flow of cars entering from Interstate Highway 189 and speeding down Shelburne Road towards downtown.
