This image is one of several showing the Hayward Street Improvement project that took place between 1941 and 1945.(1) The construction included work on Marble Avenue and Howard Street. This photo shows an early stage of construction, excavating in preparation for new macadam. The piece of machinery on the right is using a drop-hammer to break up the existing surface. The truck to the left is being loaded with broken asphalt by the crane behind it.

This street remains mostly unchanged although thick growth of bushes and small trees obscures the view on the left. The two story, yellow house in the foreground, #46 is typical of the alterations on houses in the neighborhood. The side porch has been closed in and vinyl siding has been added.
