A Black Indian WM student was practicing her cultural and religious customs outside of her residence hall which included smoking tobacco from a pipe while UVM Police Services harassed her. An Officer of the law invaded the area, kicked some of the items on the blanket and illegally searched a pouch belonging to the student. The Police Officer was not warned or reprimanded.September 1994In an official1y sponsored report titled "Incidents of Hate," and published in the school newspaper, a racist incident was reported and the report singled out a specific student/victim by reporting the exact threat, "You f***ked with the wrong people this time, you J´***king GOOK." The report claimed it was sent to an Asian male and the report identified the date it was received the residence hall. There was only one Asian male living in that hall at that time. .
At an officially sponsored UVM event, a mockery was made of Sumo wrestling, a cultural custom and honored sport of Japan. The Asian American Student Union was not consulted on this "event" and even had to pay a fee to participate in Oktoberfest.21 November 1997
A University of Vermont fraternity has been placed under suspension in connection with an alleged hazing incident, Vice President for Student Affairs Dean Batt today announced.December 1997The local Acacia chapter, located at 404 College St., will have to cease all functions -- including meetings, pledge activities and social events -- as a result of the temporary suspension, while an investigation of the alleged incident takes place.
Batt said that Student Affairs officials were notified this morning that Acacia pledges were participating in a scavenger hunt in which they were asked to insult a student of color.

An individual refused to eat in the Simpson Dining hall because they saw two people of color also eating there.
The words "DRINK BEERS, KILL QUEERS" were carved into the door of the Pottery Studio in Living/Learning.
An RA received a threatening phone message that was homophobic in nature.
A resident and RA found a cup in the Simpson Dining hall with the word "nigger" etched into it.
On Tuesday, December 9, a member of the housekeeping staff found the words, "Cock Sucking Faggots" written on the wall between the third and fourth floor of Davis Hall.

A racially offensive letter and anti-gay graffiti appeared this week at the University of Vermont, where previous bias complaints have angered students and administrators. Somebody mailed a two-page, signed racist letter to UVM´s Office of Multicultural Affairs, said Tom Gustafson, director of public relations at UVM. Gufstason said campus police are investigating. "They do need to determine whether a crime´s been committed," he said.

On Friday, February 20, Housekeeping staff found the words "____ is Gay" written on the carpet in front of a student room on the fourth floor of Marsh Hall. The words appeared to have been written with a bar of soap.

On Wednesday, March 4, 1998, an anonymous call reported to the Office of Multicultural Affairs that the words "Fuck the Black Nigs" had been written on the wall of the first floor men´s room in Lafayette Hall. The incident has been reported to Police Services.

On Monday, March 9, a student in the residence halls received a threatening e-mail message that was homophobic in nature.

A unity poster was defaced in the Center for Cultural Pluralism located in the Allen House which is currently under construction. A poster which hung in the Center called for treating everyone with respect, i.e., the blending of the colors of the races much as the blending of the colors of the rainbow. Someone wrote "Why? Niggers suck." on this rainbow poster.29 August 1998Update 8/19/98: After a thorough investigation by UVM Police Services, a suspect was identified through handwriting analysis and interviews. The State Attorney General will not prosecute this misdemeanor of vandalism or bias-related mischief. However, upon knowledge of these allegations and evidence, the sub-contractor has fired this employee. The suspect has been notified by UVM Police Services that he is not allowed on UVM property and if found here will be prosecuted for trespass.
On Saturday, August 29 between midnight and 7am someone wrote "lick my twat" on a female RA´s board in blue marker. Also in blue marker, someone wrote "Fuck Niggas" on the "In Case of Fire Sign" and drew a penis below the sign. And on the "24 hour locked doors" sign, someone wrote "bitch."In addition to these bias-related incidents, the stairwell and another floor (all in the same marker) had graffitti with references to smoking marijuana (ie. wake baked, crystal buds,etc.).
