Several posters announcing National Coming Out Week posted in Living/Learning Center were vandalized and defaced with obscenities between the hours of 1:00-7:00 a.m.

On Blue Jean Day of National Coming Out Week, white male student from Harris plasters his jeans with stickers stating "I hate gays." While probably protected by free speech, this act promotes a hostile environment.

Simple assault to male by another male in Waterman Building.

Coming Out Week bulletin board in the lobby of an East Campus residence hall is vandalized throughout the week and responses to invitations for residents to comment on the vandalism range from obscene and threatening statements against gays to statements of tolerance and support.

Simple assault to male target by another male in Votey Building.

Advertisements for the Blue Lights Campaign posted in Living/Learning Fireplace Lounge were vandalized with obscenities scratched into them.

Woman is the target of sexual assault by unknown male on edge of campus near MAT Complex at approximately l0:00 p.m.

WDW Commons glass case was vandalized -- display re: National Coming Out Week. White male is the target of intimidation and racial slurs by male person of color. This roommate conflict occurred on Redstone Campus in the late evening.

Male student, living in WDW, is the target of harassing homophobic telephone calls by unknown perpetrator.

A Middle Eastern WM student was asked by a hall-mate in reaction to the bombing in Oklahoma, "So, what building are you going to blow up now?"

Five Black women received 3 racial death threats at their residence hall, work and mailbox. Initially, UVM Police Services and the Vice-President for Student Affairs either refused or resisted issuing more security around the residence.

In reaction to the death threats, "THEY SHOULD ALL DIE" was written on a bulletin board in a neighboring residence hall.

While walking down Church St., an Asian UVM student had shouted at him, "I´m going to kick your f**kin´ ass, you J´***kin´ GOOK."

A student of color, in a Race Relations course, was told, "Why don´t you go back to where you belong?"

A Black Indian WM student was practicing her cultural and religious customs outside of her residence hall which included smoking tobacco from a pipe while UVM Police Services harassed her. An Officer of the law invaded the area, kicked some of the items on the blanket and illegally searched a pouch belonging to the student. The Police Officer was not warned or reprimanded.

In an official1y sponsored report titled "Incidents of Hate," and published in the school newspaper, a racist incident was reported and the report singled out a specific student/victim by reporting the exact threat, "You f***ked with the wrong people this time, you J´***king GOOK." The report claimed it was sent to an Asian male and the report identified the date it was received the residence hall. There was only one Asian male living in that hall at that time. .

At an officially sponsored UVM event, a mockery was made of Sumo wrestling, a cultural custom and honored sport of Japan. The Asian American Student Union was not consulted on this "event" and even had to pay a fee to participate in Oktoberfest.

A University of Vermont fraternity has been placed under suspension in connection with an alleged hazing incident, Vice President for Student Affairs Dean Batt today announced.

The local Acacia chapter, located at 404 College St., will have to cease all functions -- including meetings, pledge activities and social events -- as a result of the temporary suspension, while an investigation of the alleged incident takes place.

Batt said that Student Affairs officials were notified this morning that Acacia pledges were participating in a scavenger hunt in which they were asked to insult a student of color.

An RA found the words "Fuck you niggers" written in the public bathroom in the Simpson Hall Lobby.

A photograph of staff members of color were vandalized in the Simpson Hall Lobby.

An RA´s flyer advertising a program called "Men Stopping Rape" was defaced. The flyer said, "She fears you." Someone wrote "Don´t worry, it will be over in a minute."

Two posters, advertising an Open House Tea sponsored by the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Association were found burned.

An individual refused to eat in the Simpson Dining hall because they saw two people of color also eating there.

The words "DRINK BEERS, KILL QUEERS" were carved into the door of the Pottery Studio in Living/Learning.

An RA received a threatening phone message that was homophobic in nature.

A resident and RA found a cup in the Simpson Dining hall with the word "nigger" etched into it.

On Tuesday, December 9, a member of the housekeeping staff found the words, "Cock Sucking Faggots" written on the wall between the third and fourth floor of Davis Hall.

1997 December 10

A racially offensive letter and anti-gay graffiti appeared this week at the University of Vermont, where previous bias complaints have angered students and administrators. Somebody mailed a two-page, signed racist letter to UVM´s Office of Multicultural Affairs, said Tom Gustafson, director of public relations at UVM. Gufstason said campus police are investigating. "They do need to determine whether a crime´s been committed," he said.

20 February 1998

On Friday, February 20, Housekeeping staff found the words "____ is Gay" written on the carpet in front of a student room on the fourth floor of Marsh Hall. The words appeared to have been written with a bar of soap.

26 February 1998

Two cartoons(Cartoon 1 and Cartoon 2) appear in The Vermont Cynic, the student run newspaper.

04 March 1998

On Wednesday, March 4, 1998, an anonymous call reported to the Office of Multicultural Affairs that the words "Fuck the Black Nigs" had been written on the wall of the first floor men´s room in Lafayette Hall. The incident has been reported to Police Services.

09 March 1998

On Monday, March 9, a student in the residence halls received a threatening e-mail message that was homophobic in nature.

12 August 1998

A unity poster was defaced in the Center for Cultural Pluralism located in the Allen House which is currently under construction. A poster which hung in the Center called for treating everyone with respect, i.e., the blending of the colors of the races much as the blending of the colors of the rainbow. Someone wrote "Why? Niggers suck." on this rainbow poster.

Update 8/19/98: After a thorough investigation by UVM Police Services, a suspect was identified through handwriting analysis and interviews. The State Attorney General will not prosecute this misdemeanor of vandalism or bias-related mischief. However, upon knowledge of these allegations and evidence, the sub-contractor has fired this employee. The suspect has been notified by UVM Police Services that he is not allowed on UVM property and if found here will be prosecuted for trespass.

On Saturday, August 29 between midnight and 7am someone wrote "lick my twat" on a female RA´s board in blue marker. Also in blue marker, someone wrote "Fuck Niggas" on the "In Case of Fire Sign" and drew a penis below the sign. And on the "24 hour locked doors" sign, someone wrote "bitch."

In addition to these bias-related incidents, the stairwell and another floor (all in the same marker) had graffitti with references to smoking marijuana (ie. wake baked, crystal buds,etc.).
