The following Voicemail message was delivered to ALL on-campus residents and hall staff on Friday, December 14, 1997, at 8pm. The message is a summary of the bias-related incidents that have been reported to date.

Hello. This is an important message forwarded to all on-campus residents. Over the last two months, 8 bias-related incidents have been reported in Simpson Hall, Simpson Dining Hall, and Living/Learning. Descriptions of these 8 incidents are as follows:

  1. An RA found the words "Fuck you niggers" written in the public bathroom in the Simpson Hall Lobby.
  2. A photograph of staff members of color were vandalized in the Simpson Hall Lobby.
  3. An RA´s flyer advertising a program called "Men Stopping Rape" was defaced. The flyer said, "She fears you." Someone wrote "Don´t worry, it will be over in a minute."
  4. Two posters, advertising an Open House Tea sponsored by the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Association were found burned.
  5. An individual refused to eat in the Simpson Dining hall because they saw two people of color also eating there.
  6. The words "DRINK BEERS, KILL QUEERS" were carved into the door of the Pottery Studio in Living/Learning.
  7. An RA received a threatening phone message that was homophobic in nature.
  8. A resident and RA found a cup in the Simpson Dining hall with the word "nigger" etched into it.
All 8 of these incidents have been reported to Police Services and the appropriate University officials have been notified. We want you, students living in the residence halls, to be aware that these incidents have occurred and that they cannot be tolerated.

These types of incidents have been reported for many years. It is our intention at this time is to increase communication and awareness.

If you have information to provide, questions, or concerns about these incidents, please contact your RA, other residence hall staff members, or Police Services. Your residence hall staff can also provide you with educational and supportive resources. Please assist them in stopping these incidents that are so harmful to our community.
