Barre, nel Vermont e Carrara in Italia sono citta' gemelle. Ma le citta' non si trovano nello stesso continente! Barre si trova nell'America del Nord, negli Stati Uniti, in uno stato chiamato Vermont, nella provincia di Washington, mentre Carrara e' situata nel continente europeo, in Italia, nella regione Toscana. Le citta' sono separate dall'Atlantico, ma sono connesse dalla storia e dalla pietra. Barre e' la capitale mondiale del granito e Carrara e' la capitale mondiale del marmo--due pietre differenti, ma la pietra e' una grande parte della storia tra le due citta'. A Carrara l'arte della scultura e' una vecchia arte. Gli italiani di Carrara scolpiscono dall'epoca medievale. E a Carrara c'e' un'abbondanza di marmo da scolpire. A Carrara c'e' un'universita' dedicata all'arte che si chiama l'Accademia di Belle Arti. A Barre l'arte della scultura e' piu' recente che a Carrara. A Barre, il granito e' la pietra usata dagli stone cutters nelle cave di granito. Ma nel 1880 nelle cave di Barre mancavano i lavoratori. E molti italiani di Carrara hanno lasciato l'Italia (e Carrara) per lavorare a Barre. Irlandesi, francesi, scozzesi e gli altri immigranti hanno lavorato insieme agli italiani nelle cave. A Barre ci sono molti cattolici. C'e' una chiesa, ma la chiesa era troppo picola. Cosí, gli immigranti hanno lavorato insieme per costruire una nuova chiesa. La chiesa e' la Chiesa di Santa Monica. Santa Monica era la madre di Sant'Agostino. La chiesa e' bella. Nel 1905 la gente della chiesa ha importato un nuovo altare da Carrara. L'altare e' di marmo, e' bellissimo, e' perfetto per la chiesa. Ogni citta' ha un museo sulla sua pietra. A Carrara il museo si chiama il Museo Civico del Marmo e a Barre si chiama il Vermont Granite Museum of Barre. Il museo di Barre e' nuovo in confronto al museo a Carrara che e' stato fondato nel 1982. Il museo del granito di Barre non e' ancora aperto, ma sara' aperto nel 2003. Oggi a Barre e' possibile per una famiglia comprare una pietra tombale come una scultura. Nel Cimitero della Speranza ci sono molti bellissimi e interessanti monumenti dei morti. Uno e' una pallone di calcio per qualcuno che era un giocatore di calcio. Qualcuno amava le macchine sportive e la sua pietra tombale e' una macchina! Un altro e' un angelo che pensa. Ci sono anche le copie d'altre sculture antiche italiane. Ci sono molti bellissimi monumenti con molti dettagli. Barre ha anche un monumento degli italo-americani--e' uno stone cutter. |

Barre, Vermont and Carrara, Italy are twin cities. But the cities aren't found on the same continents. Barre is found in North America, in the United States in Washington County, Vermont, while Carrara is in Europe, in the region of Tuscany in Italy. The cities are separated by the Atlantic Ocean, but are connected by history and stone. Barre is the Granite Capital of the world, and Carrara is the Marble Capital of the world. They are two different stones, but stone is a big part of the history of each city. In Carrara the art of sculpture is an old art. The Italians in Carrara have been sculpting since medieval times. In Carrara there is an abundance of marble to sculpt with. Also in Carrara there is a university that is dedicated to art, it is called l'Accademia di Belle Arti (The Academy of Beautiful Arts). In Barre the art of sculpture is much younger than in Carrara. In Barre granite is the stone used by stone cutters in the granite quarries and sheds. In 1880 the quarries of Barre were in need of workers, many Italians left Carrara and Italy to work in Barre. The Irish, French, Scottish, and other immigrants worked together in the quarries. In Barre there were (and are) many Catholics. There was a church, but it was too small. So the immigrants worked together to build a new church. The church is called Saint Monica's Church. Saint Monica was the mother of Saint Augustin. The church is beautiful. In 1905 the parish imported a new altar from Carrara. The altar is made of marble and is very beautiful, perfect for the church. Each city has a museum about the stone. In Carrara the museum is called the Civic Museum of Marble, and in Barre is is called the Vermont Granite Museum of Barre. The museum in Barre is new compared to the museum in Carrara which was founded in 1982. The granite museum in Barre is not open yet, but it is scheduled to open in 2003. Today in Barre it is possible for a family to buy a grave stone like a sculpture. In Hope Cemetary there are many very beautiful and interesting monuments to the dead. One is a soccer ball for a man who was a soccer coach. Another person loved sports cars and his stone is a car! Another is an angel who is thinking. There are also copies of old Italian sculptures. There are many very beautiful monuments with many details. Barre also has a monument to the Italian-Americans in their town: the monument is a stone cutter. |
