A Record Wet Year

Previous mark goes under

Burlington broke the all-time yearly precipitation record in December when the old record of 50.16 inches was exceeded. The final 1998 annual total was 50.42 inches. The previous record was set in 1983.

During 1983, both April and May set monthly precipitation records. It was the second wettest November on record and the third wettest December. Conversely, June 1983 was the ninth driest June of record.

This past year was similar to 1983. January and July saw new monthly precipitation records established. The June precipitation amount was the second highest of record for the month, with the August total becoming the fifth wettest August. On the flip side, we recorded the seventh driest November and the second driest December on record.

The spring of 1983 was the wettest on record, breaking the old record by nearly four inches. In 1998, the summer was the wettest ever, with better than two inches more precipitation than the previous record.

Of the top ten wettest months of all-time in Burlington, July 1998 ranks as the fourth wettest, with June 1998 being the fifth wettest. None of the months from 1983 are among the ten all-time wettest. December 1998 was the ninth driest of all time.
